Madison Bumgarner was expelled from the Diamondbacks-Marlins match after checking for foreign substances

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner was ejected in Wednesday’s game against the Miami Marlins after an apparent argument during a foreign substance check.

Bumgarner was expelled after the bottom of the first inning by first base referee Dan Bellino, who was checking the veteran’s left hand for foreign substances.

Bellino checked Bumgarner’s hand more than the process usually took and appeared staring to the south for a few seconds during the left exchange. Full verification, Bumgarner said something Bellino, who immediately sent the All-Star four times.

Bumgarner reacted angrily and began arguing with Bellino before the two were separated by manager Torey Lovullo and Diamondbacks catcher Jose Herrera.

Bumgarner was cleared with a call from referee Ryan Willis on a pitch near Garrett Cooper in Miami. The left replaced Corbin Martin at the top of the second inning.

Bumgarner, 32, is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in six starts this season, his third with the Diamondbacks.
