Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are expected to leave tonight for Manchester United’s Under 23.
Tuanzebe, 22, was sidelined for over two months with an unspecified injury and Fosu-Mensah, also 22, suffered a new injury following his return due to damage to his knee ligament in January . MAN understands that they both traveled with the U23 team to the Bet365 stadium.
Fosu-Mensah played for 58 minutes in the U23 2-1 win against Newcastle United at Leigh Sports Village on January 10th, but hasn’t understood since. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested to Fosu-Mensah and Tuanzebe to play the second rope before being available for the first team.
“They are approaching a reserve game or a game behind closed doors,” said Solskjaer on Wednesday. “We need them to play in that kind of game before using it in a first team appearance.”
Tuanzebe has also been sidelined for six weeks earlier this season with a hip injury that he suffered in the warm-up against Liverpool in October. The central defender last played against United in the defeat in the Colchester Championships quarter-final on 18 December.
Fosu-Mensah has not appeared for United since the last game of the 2016-17 season against Crystal Palace and is out of contract at the end of the campaign. United have the possibility of another year, but could ignore it and release the Dutch national team.
Fosu-Mensah arrived for his United debut just over four years ago – the same day Marcus Rashford made his bow in the league against Arsenal – but the Dutchman only started eight times for United.
U23 start against Stoke at 19:00.
