Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Vice President and Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Ma’ruf Amin made an intriguing statement in a conversation with a member of the Covid-19 Task Force Team, Reisa Broto Asmoro.
In his statement, Ma’ruf said that the use of the corona virus vaccine (Covid-19) must still be based on the decision of the Indonesian Ulema Council even though it is declared not halal.
“So it can be used even though it is not lawful in an emergency, but with a stipulation by the institution that yes, this can be used because it is an emergency, but there must be a provision issued by the MUI,” said Ma’ruf in an online talk broadcast on YouTube BNPB, Friday ( 16/10).
According to him, the MUI seal is important to know that the Covid-19 vaccine is used in an emergency because a halal vaccine has not been found.
Ma’ruf explained that such a case had occurred when a vaccine for meningitis had not yet been found. Reflecting on that case, according to him, even though it is not lawful, vaccines can still be used because they prevent other, more dangerous effects.
“Like meningitis, it turns out that there is no halal law, but if there is no vaccine, there will be danger, it will cause disease or prolonged illness,” he said.
In the teachings of Islam, Ma’ruf explains, maintaining the soul is one of the obligations and is the purpose of the Shari’ah, in addition to the obligation to maintain the religion that is preferred.
However, in an emergency such as a pandemic, Ma’ruf said that protecting the soul can be more important and prioritized than protecting religion.
“Because of what? There is no alternative to guarding the soul, it must be prioritized. In religion, do prayers, there are conveniences,” he said.
Ma’arif emphasized that the government is currently seriously preparing for the Covid-19 vaccination, which is estimated to be carried out in early 2021.
The vaccination plan is also regulated in Presidential Decree No. 18/2020 on Vaccine Procurement and Vaccination in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic which was signed by President Joko Widodo, last October 5.
The process of procuring the vaccine will be carried out by BUMN PT Bio Farma (Persero). Meanwhile, the type and amount of Covid-19 vaccine procurement will be further determined by the Minister of Health.
Jokowi previously also targeted that the Covid-19 vaccination program would be carried out by the end of 2020. This method was carried out by the government both independently and in collaboration with other countries such as China and the United Arab Emirates.
