Maserati will expand its offer with another SUV. It will be called Grecale and its premiere is fast approaching. Now the head of the Stellantis concern, of which Maserati is a part, has also tried it.
The carmaker Maserati has been rather overlooked in recent years, but currently Modena is working hard on its renaissance. The arrival of the MC20 supersport began last year, followed by other models with which Maserati will completely change its portfolio. A complete novelty in the offer, the Grecale SUV, will be introduced this year.
The Italian manufacturer announced its arrival last year, but the car continues to hide from the public. Even at the beginning of the year, the published images did not show much, not only is Grecale hidden under a layer of camouflage, but it is also out of focus so that there is not much to see from it. Now, however, Maserati has finally shown Grecale in new pictures, which finally show some of his details.
Although Grecale is still hiding under a careful layer of camouflage, his silhouette similar to that of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, with which the car shares the Giorgio platform, is clear. For the first time ever, the bow is more clearly visible, using highly seated headlights and a wide radiator grille, which are elements that seem to be optically connected to the MC20.
The images come from the recent visit of Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, to the Maserati factory in Modena, who was able to try out the new Grecale. However, the head of the multinational concern did not provide any comment on his driving impressions.
Maserati remains a mystery about this news, even before the upcoming premiere of Grecale, which should take place later this year. However, it has already been revealed that it will not be a substitute for Levante, but a supplement to the offer. The pair of similarly large SUVs are mainly to be distinguished by their character, while Levante presents itself as such a gran turismo with a taller structure for long-distance travel, Grecale will be purely sports-oriented. It has the ambition to be the fastest and best accelerating SUV in its category.
Also, the technique in the bowels has not yet been confirmed. In any case, a mildhybrid two-liter petrol from Ghibli and Levante is expected as the basis, which would mean an output of 243 kW and a torque of 450 Nm. The standard in this case should be an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. However, the arrival of a six-cylinder fork, probably based on a 2.9-liter Stelvia QV, is also a certainty.
Maserati said last year that Grecale would introduce itself in the spring of 2021, but this did not happen, probably due to the lingering consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, so this year there was talk of a premiere before the end of 2021. This would mean sometime in 2022.
