Mathieu van der Poel and defending champion Mads Pedersen pass …

The Belgian selection does not have to fear Mathieu van der Poel at the World Cycling Championships in Imola. The Dutchman himself indicated that he will not be there and prefers an altitude training camp and the BinckBank Tour to prepare for the classics in October. Reigning world champion Mads Pedersen also fits for the difficult circuit in Italy.

Van der Poel came out with his decision after his victory in the sixth stage in the Tirreno-Adriatico. Bee The Gazzetta dello Sport the Alpecin-Fenix rider stated that “the course will be a bit too tough.”

On and around the Imola circuit, almost 5000 vertical meters have to be bridged during the road race for the men on Sunday 27 September.

The Dutch champion will go to Livigno on an altitude training camp during the World Cup and then it will head towards the BinckBank Tour, which starts on September 29. Van der Poel will then start in the Amstel Gold Race, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

“It was difficult, but we had to make a choice,” explains his sports director Christoph Roodhooft AD. “In this way we want to try to ensure that Mathieu is as strong as possible in the classic period. The course of the World Cup is quite difficult. Maybe even a bit too difficult. ”

Tom Dumoulin is the Dutch leader for the road race and will also start in the time trial, together with Jos van Emden. The other Dutch participants in the World Cup road race are: Robert Gesink, Antwan Tolhoek, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Dylan van Baarle, Pieter Weening, Sam Oomen and Martijn Tusveld.

National coach Koos Moerenhout still has a reservation regarding Dumoulin for his participation in the World Cup time trial. “We still have a fight about his participation, it depends on how he has digested the Tour de France.” Dumoulin recently announced in the Tour de France that he is not really busy with the World Cup yet. “First now the Tour, that’s what I’m focusing on. Everything else remains in the background until Paris. Then I see how I am doing. Maybe I come out of the Tour very badly and it really doesn’t make sense to do the time trial. But maybe I am doing very well in La Planche des Belles Filles and I think: why not? ”.

Mads Pedersen does not defend title

Current world champion Mads Pedersen is not part of the Danish selection for Imola. The winner of the World Cup in Harrogate will not find a course that is right for him, so he gives up his place in the selection.

Jakob Fuglsang thus becomes the forward pawn in Denmark. “The course is suitable for riders who excel in the Ardennes classics. Jakob Fuglsang is one of them ”, says national coach Anders Lund. “He is using Tirreno-Adriatico to prepare and will also schedule an altitude training course. He follows a precise plan. ”

The selection also consists of Michael Valgren Andersen, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Christopher Juul-Jensen, Mikkel Honoré, Casper Pedersen, Niklas Eg and Jonas Gregaard.

In the time trial Denmark starts with Kasper Asgreen and three-time world champion with the U23 in the discipline Mikkel Bjerg.

Sagan has doubts

It is not at all clear whether Peter Sagan will go to the world championship in Imola next Sunday. The three-time former world champion will meet a course that is not immediately possible. It must be hard to play a role. The Slovak refuses to cancel the World Cup for the time being. He has other concerns on his mind. First he wants to bring the points hunt for Sam Bennett to a successful conclusion and only in Paris does he decide whether to start the following week in the race he won three years in a row. PS: Sagan is 45 points behind the Irishman from Deceuninck – Quick Step on six stages from Paris. That will be another week of hard work in the Alps.
