Mattis: the military is already transporting equipment to the southern border

PRAGUE – The US military has already begun shipping anti-jersey gates to the southern border, as it plans to deploy troops on-site, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Sunday. a caravan from Central America was slowly moving from Mexico to the United States.

Mattis told reporters who accompanied him that details of the deployment were still being worked out but that he should have them on Sunday night. They will include exactly how many forces are needed.

The additional troops will provide logistical and other support to the Border Patrol and will reinforce the efforts of the approximately 2,000 National Guard members already on the ground. The new forces should provide logistical assistance, including air support and equipment, including vehicles and tents.

National Guard troops regularly perform these same functions. It is therefore difficult to understand why active duty forces are used.

For the past week, President Donald Trump has drawn attention to the caravan heading south to Mexico, but it is still hundreds of miles from US soil.

The National Guard is often used by states to contribute to border security. But active duty troops are rarely deployed in the United States except in a national emergency such as a hurricane or flood.
