Microsoft announces the general availability of WSL2 for Windows 10 version 2004

Microsoft will release its next major update in the spring of 2020. The new update is dubbed Windows 10 20H1 or Windows 10 version 2004, but most likely Microsoft will give it an official name closer to the implementation. The company recently released the ISO 2004 update files on the Windows Insider website, so we expect Microsoft to announce the update launch dates soon.

Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of WSL2 for Windows 10 version 2004. Craig Loewen, WSL program manager at Microsoft, wrote a blog post confirming the availability of WSL2 for Windows 10 users. While the functionality will be implemented with version 2004 if you use Windows Insider build 19041.153, you can enable one of the following commands to enable WSL2 on your system:

  • wsl (If a WSL2 distro is your default distro)
  • wsl --set-version 2, – wsl --set-default-version 2
  • wsl --import and wsl --export targeting WSL2

In addition, Microsoft will add WSL to Windows updates so that the company can distribute the latest version of the kernel regardless of whether it consumes an update for the Windows image. Although, for the first few months after release, users will have to manually check for updates to get the latest kernel. In a few months, Microsoft will release an update that will add automatic installation and maintenance features.

Windows 10 version 2004 will be a great update for users of Windows 10. Microsoft has planned several features and improvements for users and you can consult our summary article to learn more about the update of Windows 10 version 2004.
