Moon of steel for the 50th anniversary of the Omega Moonwatch

It's impossible not to know: just 50 years ago, on July 21, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the surface of the moon, and Armstrong's footprint in the lunar dust entered the moon. 'history. That day, in the eyes of the world, the Omega Speedmaster became not only the endowment watch adopted by NASA for its astronauts, but also the Moonwatch, the only watch to have been officially used on the Moon.

To celebrate this half-century, Omega does not skimp on star dust. In Paris, she joins the exhibition devoted to the moon at the Grand Palais. At Cape Canaveral, she associated former astronauts and George Clooney around Raynaud Aischlimann, time for a lunar dinner. On the watch side, the brand carefully maintains nostalgia around its flagship model. She had already unveiled a gold version, the Moonshine Gold, almost identical reissue of the watch offered by Omega to the team Apollo 11 and Richard Nixon (who for the anecdote refused then this gift because too much expensive). Now, the brand has taken advantage of the Time To Move event held in May by the Swatch Group of which it is part, to unveil a new limited edition, this time in steel.

This Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine Limited Edition (yes, it's long …) will be published in 6969 copies. But its classic design, closer to vintage pieces that are now snapped by the fanatics of Speedmaster, should find buyers in the blink of an eye. Especially since the steel of its case allows it to appear at "only" 9000 €, when the gold version is proposed to 36.600 € HT … Certainly, it remains a sum, but for a collector, the placement could also prove fruitful over time …

Side dial, the commemorative side of this piece is found in its dial alternating two areas of color, between gray and black, giving as a relief effect in the minutes. In addition to the hours, the hands and the Omega vintage Moonshine gold logo, the 11 o'clock hour mark is marked with two 1s in gold, a reference to Apollo 11. The subdial at 9 o'clock picks up the famous image Buzz Aldrin descending the LEM scale to the lunar ground.

This new, 42 mm-long, vintage version features 3861 Master Chrnometer co-axial movement with a 48-hour power reserve. It takes again the slightly asymmetrical design of the Speed, with its crown of protection, its pushers, and its alternation of surfaces polished and brushed, always of the most beautiful effect. Here, the bezel Mooshine gold polished and polished black ceramic with tachymeter scale Ceragold.

It is on the back of the case that the commemoration is in full swing, with a laser-engraved black background of Armstrong's footprint and his first words on the surface in gold-plated letters. As for the presentation box of this limited edition, it is in itself a collector, between its NASA mission suitcase appearance, the two mission patch offered (50th anniversary and Apollo XI) two commemorative plaques etched … And a module lunar miniature on which to display your Speedmaster vintage 2019. A collector in power if it is to seduce all aficionados of Moonwatch.
