Coronavirus kills people due to excessive immunity
The dominant factor in the course of the disease is the overreaction of the immune system to the pathogen, which is played by SARS-CoV-2. In a study by Chinese scientists, the coronavirus rapidly spreading through the patient’s body causes hypercytokinemia or a cytokine storm, which involves the uncontrolled activation of immune cells. The corresponding reaction can be potentially fatal for the patient, as it leads to damage to tissues, in particular, the lungs.
Due to the cytokine storm, the infected COVID-19 rises body temperature, blood coagulation, lowers blood pressure, oxygen deficiency is felt and fluid in the lungs is formed. For patients with a new type of coronavirus infection, the appearance of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, metabolic acidosis, coagulation dysfunction, and multiple organ failure syndrome (SPON) is characteristic. In particular, this explains the relatively high proportion of deaths among those infected.
From the point of view of Professor Daishun Liu, who is one of the authors of the scientific work, the situation with COVID-19 treatment is aggravated by the lack of an effective medicine. According to a scientist from China, at present, the goal of treatment should be to combat symptoms, intensive support of the functions of internal organs, as well as blood purification.
In conclusion, researchers from China emphasized the need to prevent re-infection in patients. So, SARS-CoV-2 can harm not only the respiratory, but also the digestive system due to infection in the intestines. The authors of the scientific work believe that in this case the body becomes unprotected from other pathogenic pathogens.
