Scientists may have discovered a special black hole with the help of the Hubble space telescope.
Astronomers had long been looking for evidence of its existence.
This specimen may be a special black hole. It is 740 million light years from Earth and has 50,000 times the mass of our sun.
With its mass, it is a so-called black hole of medium mass (IMBH – Intermediate Mass Black Hole). So far, science has only known significantly larger or smaller specimens.
IMBHs are particularly difficult to spot because they are smaller and less active than supermassive black holes. Science became aware of the IMBH when a strong flare of X-rays was discovered in 2006.
