Navalny reports from Charité: “I could breathe on my own”

According to Berlin Charité, the health of Kremlin critic Navalny has improved. This now spoke up himself – with a photo on Instagram.

The Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny spoke up for the first time after being poisoned. The 44-year-old posted a photo on Instagram.

“Hi, this is Navalny. I miss you all,” says the caption. “I still can hardly do anything, but yesterday I was able to breathe on my own all day.” In the photo you can see Navalny sitting next to his wife on a hospital bed at the Berlin Charité.

The Russian opposition activist was hospitalized on August 22, after collapsing two days earlier on a domestic flight in Siberia.

Even before Navalny’s Instagram post, the Charité announced that his condition had continued to improve. According to this, he could be “completely weaned from mechanical ventilation” and temporarily leave his bed.

Novichok confirmed by laboratories

According to the federal government, the opposition was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent from the so-called Novitschok group, and laboratories in France and Sweden confirmed the finding.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) spoke of an “attempted poisoning” and called for an explanation from the Russian side. Since then, tensions between Berlin and Moscow have intensified massively. The Russian government denies any guilt for poisoning the opponent of President Vladimir Putin.

Russia underlines its willingness to help

Meanwhile, Russia reiterated its readiness to investigate the poison attack on the opposition politician. A spokesman for the presidential office in Moscow said everyone would be happy if Navalny recovered. He could then come back to Russia. However, the Russian government still does not understand why it does not have access to the samples from Navalny.
