Nigeria kidnapped school girls released | NOS

For some time it was unclear how many girls were involved. Earlier reports of 317 abducted children. A regional security commissioner said that number was incorrect. He told the BBC that 279 girls have been released and that no one is in detention anymore. The governor now also reports that it concerns 279 children.

A father of one of the girls told Reuters news agency on Saturday that seven children had escaped.

Armed men raided the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in the town of Jangebe on Friday. It is unclear whether they belong to a gang. It is also not known whether they received a ransom.

Schoolchildren were also kidnapped in December 200 kilometers away, and earlier last month in Kagara, further south.
