Nivel: difference in healthcare provision between people with high and low incomes after HAP triage by telephone / News

People with a higher income can visit the doctor at the HAP more often after a telephone triage from the GP post (HAP) than people with a lower income. People with a lower income, on the other hand, are more likely to receive a telephone consultation or home visit. This is evident from the research of the Nivel.

Possible explanations for these differences are the underlying health problems that people with a lower income have more often.“People in a socio-economic vulnerable position also often have less good knowledge about health and their body, which means that they are less able to explain their complaints”, the researchers said.

There are no differences in the assessment of how urgent the complaints are, but there are differences in the allocation of appropriate care. People with a higher income are more often invited to the HAP for a consultation with the same complaints and an equal assessment of the degree of urgency, while people with a low income more often receive advice by telephone or a home visit.
