NREL has developed a record solar cell with 39.5% efficiency under normal light


Scientists are in NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) broke another record. Although the most efficient cells from 2019 had an efficiency of up to 47.1% (and yet behind being NREL), this involved focused light. As for the standard corresponding to AM1.5 sunlight, there are file numbers below. And this file was broken by new items with a simpler design using Inverted Metamorphic Multijunction (IMM) architecture. There are three transitions (this is not unusual), but each is made with a different material. Each of them has a different sensitivity to a different part of the light spectrum, which increases efficiency. This also explains why these items exceed the well-known Shockley-Queisser limit. This is because it speaks of a maximum efficiency of about 34% at one solar cell junction and is not about the theoretical maximum efficiency of any solar cell. There are three transitions here, and in history we have had, for example, six transitions.

In the upper layer we find GaInP, in the middle is GaAs with cost ratio (which further improves efficiency) and at the bottom is GaInAs. The result is a 39.5% efficiency record under standard light corresponding to that of the sun, i.e. AM1.5 (thereby exceeding the 2-year NREL record and six-pass cells also using III-V materials) . For space applications (AM0), the efficiency should be 34.2%. Work is currently underway to reduce the production costs of such a solution.
