A hospital in Austria wrongly amputated a patient’s leg some time ago. This is considered a ‘tragic error’ caused by humans.
Based on the information from the Freistadt Clinic, the patient did suffer from several diseases. Previous disease affected his leg, so his left leg had to be amputated.
“On Tuesday (18/5/2021), we were very surprised. Even with quality assurance standards, the wrong leg (not the one that had to be amputated) of the 82-year-old man … was amputated,” said the clinic. Reuters, Friday (21/5/2021).
According to the clinic, the amputation error was only discovered when the patient’s bandage was changed on Thursday (20/5/2021) morning. The amputation error is thought to have occurred before the operation, when the leg to be amputated was marked.
“Unfortunately there was an error, where the right leg was amputated and not the left leg. This was due to a series of unfavorable circumstances,” he said.
Currently, the clinic is investigating what happened and will review the standard of health services in their place.
Meanwhile, the patient will be given psychological assistance and still have to undergo further surgery to lift his left leg from the middle thigh.
“The operation is scheduled immediately,” he concluded.
