Opponents of the Latvian women’s handball team have been identified in the EC qualifying tournament


The Latvian women’s handball team will meet with the national teams of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy and Greece in the first round of the 2022 European Championship (ECC) qualifying tournament, the lottery took place on Wednesday.

Last year’s champion, the Norwegian women’s handball team, automatically secured a place in the final tournament. It will not have to participate in the qualification cycle together with the organizers of the 2022 European Championship Slovenia, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro. This means that the opportunity to fight for entry into the final tournament will be for the remaining 12 places.

The qualification will take place in two rounds. As in the final tournament, in the second round of the European Championship qualification, 21 teams have provided automatic seats, evaluating the results of last year’s European Championship, as well as the ranking of the national teams of the European Handball Federation (EHF).

In total, 24 teams will participate in the second round of the 2022 European Championship – 21 teams that have won an automatic place in this qualifying round, as well as three teams that will win their groups in the first qualifying round. The games will take place in six groups of four teams each. The Latvian women’s team will participate in the first round of the 2022 European Championship qualifiers to fight for entry into the next round. In Group B, Latvia will have to compete with Greece, Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The first round of the qualifying tournament will take place in Greece. In the first qualification round, 11 teams will participate, which will compete in two groups of four teams, as well as in one group with three teams. In addition to the above samples, the Faroe Islands, Portugal, Kosovo, Israel, Finland and Luxembourg will participate in the first round of qualification.

It was previously planned that the first qualifying games would take place in April, but due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, it was decided that at least the first qualifying round would be played in the so-called “bubbles” or runner-up format. Therefore, all the first round games of the European Championship will take place from May 31 to June 6. 16 teams will play in the final tournament of the 2022 European Championship.
