Alona Ostapenko, the first racket of Latvian women’s tennis, will compete with Amanda Anisimov, a tennis player from the USA, in the second round of the Doha “WTA 1000” series tournament today. The match will start at about 4 p.m. Latvian time.
Ostapenko is 13th in the WTA rank and has been seeded 15th in the competition, while her opponent is 41st in the WTA rank and was not seeded in this tournament. This will be the first game for both tennis players. The Latvian tennis player played from 0-3 in the first round match and won the victory over the Frenchman Ocean Doden (WTA 93) with 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, Anisimov defeated Brazilian tennis player Beatrice Hadad May (WTA 73) in the first round with 7-5, 6-4. The winner of the next round will have to meet Magda Linet from Poland or Barbora Krejchikov from the Czech Republic.
Ostapenko won the WTA 500 Series in Dubai on Sunday and made it to the final doubles, while her opponent failed in the first round of the singles tournament. The Latvian tennis player has celebrated victories in 11 of 14 games this season, while Anisimova has celebrated eight victories in ten matches. Ostapenko is playing in the Doha tournament for the sixth time in his career, making his debut in the finals in 2016. Anisimov, on the other hand, is participating in the Doha tournament for the second time, reaching the third round for the first time in 2020.
The Latvian tennis player has won five WTA tournament titles in her career, while her opponent has triumphed in one tournament. Latvia’s first racket, along with Ukrainian tennis player Ludmila Kichenok, had also entered the doubles match, but already in the first round the duo failed, losing to Americans Kori Gauf and Jessica Pegula with 3-6, 2-6.
The hard Doha tournament will run until February 26th.
