If Lionel Messi does not renew his contract with FC Barcelona during the course of this season, he will be allowed to leave the Catalan top club for free on 1 July. A possible destination could be Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola has just signed up.
The Spanish coach has worked successfully with the Argentinian star in the past, but he does not (yet) hope for a reunion. “Messi is a FC Barcelona player. I am very grateful for what that club has done for me, they really gave me everything. But what I want is for him to end his career there.”
“As a FC Barcelona fan, I would really like Messi to stop playing there. But it is his last contract year and I don’t know what’s going on in his head. At the moment he is still a FC Barcelona player, the transfer market opens not until June or July. “
It is open secret that Barça is in need of money. That is why the board of the club could perhaps consider a transfer from Messi in the winter mercato. Because if he doesn’t sign up, he will leave for free next summer.
Yet Guardiola is not working on all of that, he says. “We have great games to play, that’s all I’m doing right now.”
