The pharmaceutical company Pfizer delivered to the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) the application for the sanitary registration of its vaccine against Covid-19, confirmed the Ministries of Health (Ssa) and Foreign Relations (SRE).
“A few minutes ago, Pfizer delivered the health registration application file to Cofepris. It is important to be clear that it is delivery (…) It will be reviewed if the file is complete. Did not happen [la entrega] Wednesday, as had been said in the Pulse of Health, but today.
“We are happy that steps are being taken,” announced Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.
In a nightly press conference, the official emphasized that it is not up to Pfizer to resolve the issue of the deep-freezing network to distribute the vaccine, if it is approved, and that if it were to do so, it would incur a crime.
“Pfizer has a technological resource that can be useful, but it does not solve everything, they are advanced freezer boxes and they serve for the transfer between a freezer and the vaccination point. We are in permanent dialogue and we see how this resource can be integrated into government plans, but it is not Pfizer that has to resolve the issue of deep freezing outside the framework of the indications of the Ministry of Health.
“If I did, it would be a crime and anyone who participated would be an accomplice,” he said.
The Undersecretary of Health stressed that, to date, no formal information has been sent about the vaccination scheme against Covid-19 in Mexico. In addition, he stressed that there is only one National Health System that is responsible for the modality of vaccination.
“We have not sent formal information on how we are going to structure the vaccination against Covid because there are previous preparations for which we are working. No state authority should rush to make plans, because there is only one National Health System by law.
“It is not the competence of states to decide on the vaccination modality, but we will address it very soon,” he said.
Finally, the official called for caution regarding the vaccine issue.
He recognized that having one or more doses that inhibit the virus is highly anticipated; however, no advance decisions should be made or speculated about.
“Prudence, on the one hand we all want a vaccine or many, many types of vaccine, because it can help countries to improve with respect to the epidemic.
“For the government it is an instruction to work expeditiously to obtain this vaccine. What depends on other parties, the companies, is not in our control, but we are going to facilitate the work of regulation and operation so that they take effect as soon as possible, “he said.
Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon reported that Pfizer has already requested sanitary authorization from Mexico regarding the vaccine it develops against Covid-19.
On his Twitter account, Ebrard Casaubon stated that the Ssa confirmed that it had received the authorization request for the vaccine developed by Pfizer.
Paola Fontanelli, director of Communication, Digital Experience and Social Responsibility at Pfizer Mexico, reported that the pharmaceutical company awaits the resolution of the FDA so that – from there – regulation begins in each of the countries that purchases the vaccine.
