“Everyone was hoping for a miracle. This one, however, did not happen.”

“The worst assumptions about the missing Płock staroste have been confirmed. Mariusz Bieniek drowned in Wisła after an accident that took place in the early evening on August 22, 2021.” – announced on Wednesday the district office in Płock.

As emphasized in the announcement, the search for starost Mariusz Bieńek lasted several days. “Family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, inhabitants of the Płock Poviat – they all hoped for a miracle. This, however, did not happen” – wrote in the announcement about the death of the Płock staroste. “The Płock district was plunged into mourning” – emphasized.



Condolences in connection with the death of the starost were given, among others, by Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, president of PSL and Adam Struzik, marshal of the Masovian Voivodeship, vice-president of PSL.

“Mariusz Bieniek, the starost of the Płock poviat, has died. One of the best local government officials I have had the honor of meeting, he has always been associated with the PSL. Great loss for the Płock land. May he rest in peace.

“Sometimes words are simply missing. It’s hard to believe, and even harder to understand. It’s impossible to reconcile. Suddenly, our friend Mariusz Bieniek passed away too early. .

The staroste was also said goodbye by Marcin Kierwiński, the secretary general of the PO. “Sad news. Mariusz Bieniek, the starost of Płock, died tragically. A good man and a local government official devoted to the Płock region. Compassion for his family and friends. May he rest in peace” – he wrote.

– He was an outstanding local government official, a great man, everyone liked and loved him (…) Everyone is desperate – said Piotr Zgorzelski (PSL).

Prosecutor’s office investigation

The search for the Płock starosta on the Vistula River lasted from Sunday. The accident happened on Sunday evening on the Vistula River near the town of Świniary. – As a result of an unfortunate event, men fell out of the boat. Outsiders helped one of them. The second one got ashore with the help of firefighters – said senior captain Edward Mysera, spokesman of the Płock fire brigade, on Sunday evening.

The third man – the Płock starost – could not be found despite the action lasting several hours.

Two men who were involved in the accident were questioned as witnesses on Monday.

From Sunday, about 120 people were involved in the search for the starost of Płock every day: firefighters from the State Fire Service, volunteer firefighters from the area, several dozen policemen with a patrol boat and employees of Polish Waters.

There were a total of 15 boats on the river. There were three sonars and two teams of divers. About 20 kilometers of the river were searched. The banks of the river were also patrolled. In the case of the accident on the Vistula with the participation of Mariusz Bieńek, the investigation is being conducted by the Płock district prosecutor’s office. A section is planned for Thursday. For now, the manslaughter qualification has been adopted, but there are many indications that the final classification of the act will be changed to a mishap. At the present stage, the case is being investigated – no charges have been brought against anyone.

– At this stage, everything indicates that it was an unfortunate accident, but more detailed information will be available after the results of the section are obtained – noted Marcin Policiewicz, deputy district prosecutor in Płock. According to investigators, preliminary findings show that the boat capsized on the Vistula River when it ran aground. The sailors attempted to put the boat on the water, but at one point the Płock staroste left and was unable to return. The two remaining men, despite their attempt, did not manage to reach it.

He was the youngest mayor, then he became the staroste

Mariusz Bieniek was born on October 20, 1983. He lived with his wife, daughter and son in Wyszogród, with which he was also professionally connected for many years. “In 2002, at the age of 19, he got an internship at the Commune Office in Bodzanów and from that moment his adventure with the local government began” – reminds the Poviat Starosty in Płock.

It was also mentioned that in 2007 the then mayor of Wyszogród proposed Mariusz Bieniek to take the position of his deputy, and then – in 2010, after the mayor’s decision to retire, Mariusz Bieniek ran for this position. “He won these elections, becoming the youngest steward in the country. He was then 27 years old” – noted among others Płock starosty.

In 2014 he became the starost of Płock.
