Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G-soc has 5G modem with mmWave support – Tablets and Phones – News

Qualcomm presents a new 5G soc for midrange smartphones. The Snapdragon 750G has the same X52 modem as the Snapdragon 765G. It is therefore probably the cheapest soc with mmWave support.

Qualcomm positions the new Snapdragon 750G under the existing Snapdragon 768G and 765G. The new soc has, among other things, a less powerful GPU. Despite its lower position, the Snapdragon 750G features newer technology, such as two fast cores based on Arm’s Cortex-A77 design. The higher ranked socs have A76 cores.

The Snapdragon 750G has an Adreno 619 GPU that is less powerful than the Adreno 620 of the higher positioned midrange socs. Also the digital signal processor in neural processing unit are less powerful. The new soc is made by Samsung at 8nm. The higher positioned socs are made by Samsung at 7nm with EUV.

The Snapdragon 750G contains the same X52 modem as in the more expensive socs. That is a 5G modem with support for both low and high mmWave frequencies. However, 5G networks that use mmWave frequencies are hardly active. It is not yet clear when those frequencies will be used in the Netherlands and Belgium. That will probably take years.

Qualcomm says phones will come out with the Snapdragon 750G at the end of this year. The soc is presented as a successor to the 730G. That soc has no 5G support. The manufacturer also says that the new soc is compatible with the Snapdragon 690 5G in terms of pin connection and software. Manufacturers can therefore easily upgrade devices with that soc to the newer chip. The Snapdragon 690 5G is largely the same as the new 750G, but it lacks mmWave support.
