Lhe Saint-Verhaegen festivities and ceremonies, initially scheduled for Friday, will not take place in view of the worrying health situation, jointly announced Tuesday the Free University of Brussels (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The event is therefore postponed to a more favorable date, in the second semester of this academic year, if the health situation allows it, adds the press release.
“As citizen universities, we must take into account the societal context around us. It is also a matter of taking into account the situation of hospitals whose staff have been fighting daily for many months and are once again on the front line. Finally, we must take into account the need for all citizens to reduce their risk-taking in order to allow the maintenance of the functioning of our health system, our education system and our society as a whole ”, underline the rectresses Annemie Schaus (ULB) and Caroline Pauwels (VUB).
The two universities therefore felt that they could not maintain the annual invitation to thousands of members of their communities to gather in the streets of Brussels for the Saint-Verhaegen celebrations.
Last year already, the Saint-V had been relegated online, on social networks and the Twitch platform.
“It had already been extremely difficult to fall behind at the height of the Covid crisis. Just as much is making such a decision now. We know how important it is for our students and our alumni to be able to experience events like Saint-V, ”regret the rectresses, however calling on the entire student community to behave responsibly, by not organizing events. alternative celebrations.
On the side of the ULB Student Circles Association, the disappointment is obviously great. “This decision is a real blow that we have just learned and for which we have not been consulted at all. But that’s how it is, it is now a question of ‘disorganizing’ everything that had already been prepared, ”we deplore internally.
Saint-V commemorates Théodore Verhaegen, founder of the ULB.
