The survey of the last decade of the planet, published in 2011, had two major priority missions: Perseverance rover in Mars for rock collection on the surface of the ‘Red Planet’; and Europa Clipper’s mission to Jupiter and Europe, its moon. The mission is preparing for the 2024 launch aboard the Europa Clipper spacecraft.
Scientists studying the outer planets of the solar system have been campaigning to return visits to Uranus or Neptune since the Voyager-2 encounter in the late 1980s. The case for science continued to strengthen during the following years.
This consideration is given to the size of the planets now found around other stars dominated by a series between three and four times the width of Earth, such as Uranus and Neptune. “This actually poses a problem for the planet’s formation theory,” explains Prof Leigh Fletcher, who contributed to the report.

There are opportunities for favorable launches in 2031 and 2032 that would allow spacecraft to use gravitational slingshots around Jupiter to reduce their travel to Uranus for ‘only’ 13 years.
