Second cycle of the 42nd International Film Festival of Havana postponed

Havana, Feb 8 (EFE) .- The organizers of the 42nd International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana reported this Monday that they have decided to postpone the second stage of the cultural event to an unspecified date due to the current situation imposed by a regrowth of the covid-19 in the Cuban capital.

The first season of the Havana Film Festival was held on its usual calendar -from December 3 to 13, 2020- and the second cycle, dedicated to the official section of fiction, debut, documentary, animation, short film and post-production competitions. It was scheduled for March 11-21.

A statement published on the official page of the event explains that the measures taken by the island’s authorities to stop the wave of infections that have concentrated high numbers in the capital for several weeks include strict quarantines for international travelers and the closure of cinemas .

“This scenario makes it impossible to mobilize the organizational and assurance infrastructure necessary to carry out the schedule of activities planned for the second stage of the festival,” says the Organizing Committee of the main film competition that takes place each year in the Caribbean country.

In addition to the room screenings, at this stage the filmmakers would present the films, question and answer sessions, press conferences, master classes, exhibitions, as well as book and magazine launches, among other activities, he adds.

In consideration of the current complex epidemiological situation, the Festival management said that it postponed the contest section until “the conditions are created to ensure its successful completion” and that the new date will be reported shortly.

In its December phase, 92 films were screened in the categories of Latin American Contemporary Panorama, International, La Hora del Corto, Los Colores de la Diversidad and Documentary Panorama, and as an alternative to reducing the capacity in cinemas, a space enabled on television State screened films participating in the event.

Since the end of 2020, the curve of covid-19 infections began to rise progressively and both last January and in the first week of February of this year mark the highest figures since the first cases of the disease were detected on the island ten months ago. EFE
