The US Senate rejected an attempt by Republican Rand Paul from Kentucky to recognize the impeachment process of ex-President Donald Trump as unconstitutional. About it reports CNN.

55 senators opposed the consideration of this initiative, 45 supported. The channel notes that five Republican senators voted against the proposal of their party member, taking the side of the Democrats.

The author of the initiative insisted on recognizing the impeachment against Trump as contrary to the Constitution. The Republican pointed out that since the former president no longer holds office, there is no point in impeachment. “Since noon last Wednesday, Donald Trump has not held any of the positions listed in the Constitution, he is a private citizen,” said the senator.

Members of the House of Representatives have now submitted a resolution of impeachment to the Senate. Two weeks earlier, the lower house of parliament supported impeachment of then President Trump. 232 Congressmen voted for his conviction, against 197. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer reportedthat impeachment hearings are to begin on 8 February.
