Latvian women’s tennis players Anastasia Sevastova and Alona Ostapenko lost in the first round of the WTA “Premier 5” tournament in Rome on Monday.
Sevastova, who ranks 46th in the WTA ranking, gave in to Jasmine Paolin, who is ranked 99th in the world, with 2-6, 3-6.
In the first game, Paolini won the first game with her service, but then the tennis player who took the service was five times superior. In the seventh game, the Italian managed to use the right to serve, but in the eighth she was beaten by Latvian tennis players. – 6-2
In the second set, after the “dry”, the first game was lost while serving to the opponent, in the second, the Latvian tennis player lost by serving himself. Only one of the two break points was played – 0: 2.
As both athletes struggled with the difficulty of serving, the point, serving the opponent, both tennis players scored up to the ninth game, in which the Italian finally won their service game, finishing the game with a success of 6-2, 6-3.
A total of 13 games out of 17 were won by the player who did not serve.
Until now, the two tennis players had not played against each other.
For his performance in Rome, Sevastova earned one point in the WTA rank.
Sevastova was previously in the United States, where the US Open ended its eight-loss series but stopped in the second round. Liepāja has won only two of the 12 games this season, before winning the first round of the US Open, gaining previous success in the Federation Cup, when Serena Williams was defeated. On the WTA tour, her balance this season is 1-9.
Meanwhile, Paolini is the sixth tournament since the season has resumed. She was also in the US before, but lost in both tournaments in New York in the first game. The Italian returned to Europe and took part in the tournament in Istanbul, where he did not win the second round. During his career, the Italian tennis player did not stand out with great success, entering the top eight in three WTA tournaments.

In the second set, in the first game, Ostapenko lost by serving, then lost to 0: 2. In the fourth game they managed to equalize the result – 2: 2, but immediately they lost the point again by serving themselves, and in the set they managed to win only in the seventh game, reaching 3: 4.
The two tennis players had not competed with each other before.
The Ostapenko tournament in Rome is the first since the resumption of the season. She started the year at the Australian Open, where she stopped in the second round, but then lost in the first match of the St. Petersburg tournament and advanced to the third round in Doha. He has currently celebrated three victories in seven games on the WTA tour.
Meanwhile, Linete resumed the season in the USA, where she reached the second round of the Lexington tournament, stopped in the first round of the New York WTA Premier and reached the third round of the US Open. In February, the Polish woman won the Huechina International tournament in Thailand, winning the second WTA title in her career.
In the second round, Linete will meet with Eliza Mertens from Belgium (WTA 20) or Suvei Xie from Taiwan (WTA 62).
