The episode of "The Voice" on Tuesday night took a very weird turn, with one of the finalists having been saved from the elimination without even playing a song – and some extremely unhappy fans accuse Adam Levine .
Levine, coach of NBC's hit television series since his debut seven years ago, has found himself amidst the biggest controversy of this season. On Monday night, the top 10 finalists came out. As usual, on Tuesday, everyone gathered for the vote of the spectator results to learn which singers would survive and participate in the semi-finals next week.
The quirk began when host Carson Daly brought the participants to the stage and one person was missing: Reagan Strange, the 14-year-old soul-pop singer.
"She is in the building, does not feel good at the moment, she does not join us. But stay in the spirit and is part of the show, for now, "assured Daly to the public. "So we think of her."
In most cases, an absence would be unusual, but it does not matter, except that when Daly read the results, Strange was among the last three winners, along with Dave Fenley, a 39-year-old peasant artist, and 22 years old. DeAndre Nico, former singer of R & B-soul. Because only two singers would be eliminated, they all had the chance to try to save themselves (the "instant backup" of the series) by performing an extra song, while fans tweeted live a special hashtag for their favorite.
The only problem? Strange, who played Faith Hill's "Cry" at Monday's show, was now too sick to sing.
"Dave, DeAndre and Reagan are still at risk of being eliminated. And you can only save one. Unfortunately, Reagan still feels bad weather, she will not be able to perform tonight. Daly said seriously. So, a twist! He clarified the rules: "You can always send a tweet to save Reagan. . . so she will not play, but she is not far off. "
The producers suddenly switched to a strange angel, who was standing in a bathrobe behind the scenes, next to his mother. The situation quickly became even stranger. Fenley played Lonestar's "Amazed", while Nico played with John Legend's "All of Me", while other coaches (Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Jennifer Hudson) congratulated him. After Nico's song, it was time for Levine to give his opinion, because he was part of Levine's team with Strange. (Fenley was part of Shelton's team.)
"It sucks man. DeAndre, you are an exquisite singer. I am a bit confused as to why you are at the bottom. It puzzles me. But I mean this, "Levine began, pausing, as he seemed to be looking for a tactful way to make his remarks.
"There is an incredibly talented little girl right now who is not able to fight for her place on this show. And you were lucky tonight to be able to sing. And dude, you sang like a champion, "said Levine. "I can not sing for Reagan. Reagan has to sing for Reagan, and she's not here. "
Nico had the expression of someone who felt that things would not go well, his coach seeming to be a bigger fan of his other teammate. The camera rocked between Nico and Strange, who was still behind the scenes.
"It's really, really hard for me not to just …" Levine stopped. "As much as I urge you all to vote for this man, because he should never have been at the bottom of the list," he is arrested again. "I do not know if I have the heart not to tell everyone right now -" Levine stopped once more, looking frustrated.
Levine finally decided this: "I have a very special relationship with Reagan. And I have two little girls at home. The idea of breaking her heart by not encouraging everyone to give this girl the means to redeem herself and redeem herself next week would be too far beneath me. "
"I want you to know that I like you. I appreciate what you have done here tonight and honestly, I think you should both be present. But I have to fight for my daughter, "Levine told Nico, as Strange began to cry. "And I have to make sure that I represent her correctly right now, because she has not had the opportunity to use her voice tonight, so I'm going to use it for her." as well as possible so as to be sure that she will be able to do it next week, that's all I can say, it's strange. "
It was one of the most difficult moments of television that we have seen for some time. As the show progressed to the commercial, the producers briefly presented the results live for #VoiceSaveDave, #VoiceSaveDeAndre and #VoiceSaveReagan. Strange and Nico were neck and neck, with respectively 38% and 37% of the vote.
A few minutes later, Daly announced, "America was instantly saved. . .Reagan Strange! Shouted it. "What a story for Reagan Strange, who could not play, is still eligible for your vote, and America is moving it to the semi-finals!"
In some ways, it was nice to see a young singer (clearly devastated by the lack of luck that fell ill) land another shot. Strange was too moved to even look at the camera, and his fans were ecstatic.
However, there have been quite a few additional viewers who, we have not said, are not happy that Levine has so minutely cast one of his team members under the bus on live television. While Nico was kind and thanked Levine for his support throughout the season, furious tweets poured in so quickly that it was hard to keep up – "shame on Adam Levine" was a common phrase.
Angry comments have also flooded Levine's Instagram. "The Voice" The comments on Facebook are also a mess. A small sample of Twitter:
Even John Legend noticed that something was wrong:
So, "The Voice" could it be a great advertising and – as suggested by some fans – bring Nico next week for a recovery? We would not let them go.
In both cases, producers need to be aware of the backlash. (And hope to protect Strange, a teenager who has done nothing wrong, from the social media stack.) During the episode, after Levine's comments, Clarkson seemed to have the impression that a storm was going to hit – she threw herself quickly to defend her fellow coach.
"I know Adam and his heart, and I know that he loves his team. He feels really bad for Reagan, "she said, adding that Nico" sang hell "of his song. I just wanted to say that I know it's so horrible that Reagan is not able to show up. That's where it comes from, he's disgusted for her. Everyone did a fantastic job tonight, a great job. "
