Lhe Belgium is not currently experiencing an influenza epidemic. However, figures from the weekly report of the public health institute Sciensano indicate a noticeable increase in the number of cases.

To be able to speak of a real influenza epidemic, the epidemic threshold must be exceeded for 15 days. This year, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) set it at 128 people per 100,000 inhabitants with symptoms of the disease. This limit may vary from year to year.

During the past week, the total incidence of consultations with a general practitioner for flu-like symptoms reached 120 consultations per 100,000 population. That’s a big increase from the week before, when that number was 70.

Sciensano also bases its figures on the number of nasal swabs taken by general practitioners that test positive for influenza.
