Slaves were owned by ancestors Mitch McConnell, says NBC's report

Mitch McConnell, the Majority Leader of the Seanad, is a direct descendant of two slave owners in his family line, according to the NBC report published Monday.

James McConnell and Richard Daley, two of Kentucky Republican's great grandparents, had at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Ala., NBC reported, citing 19th century census records. All the slaves were women but two.

McConnell, who grew up in the Limestone County area, said he was against reimbursement, the process to compensate for the descendants of slaves. Recently the idea of compensation has fueled the political debate surrounding racial injustice.

“I don't think repayments are a good idea for 150 years ago, when none of us are currently living,” he said in June before the Tí committee held hearings on the subject. “We have tried to deal with our original slave labor by combating civil war, by passing significant civil rights legislation. We have elected an American African president. ”

McConnell did not request a comment from The Washington Post.

NBC reports:

Slave experts pointed out that the descendants of slave owners should not be personally responsible for the deeds of their ancestors. But they also argued that families who came from slaves owners, like McConnell's, probably belonged to the laborers of slaves who sent farm families into an earlier knee – a point made by many supporters, t who said that descendants had never lost the economic interest of their ancestors to white families.

NBC reported that it had received no record of McConnell's family history, including in his 2016 memoir, “The Long Game.” The book mentions slavery twice, including a chapter on Barack Obama who calls “the original sin”. ”He said,“ it was a proud moment ”when Obama was elected.

NBC reported that Day, the father of McConnell's great grandmother, Othella Daley, had five female slaves aged between 2 and 22 years old, according to the 1850 Census. Four of the slaves were said to be escaping, NBC reported.

In the next census in 1860, it was reported that he had five slaves, three men and two women. In 1860, James McConnell was listed as the owner of four slaves, each of whom escaped. None of the slaves were identified by name.

Some competitors on the Democratic slot for the president in 2020 have emerged to support repayments.
