Snapchat has already found a use for LiDAR in iPhone 12 Pro

Users of Snapchat on the iPhone 12 Pro will benefit from a new functionality linked to LiDAR. Thanks to the latter, the application will provide a more immersive augmented reality experience.

Apple lifted the veil on the new iPhone iteration a few days ago. As fans anxiously await the release of the iPhone 12 Pro and its brethren, more interesting information than others continues to emerge from all over the web. And the least we can say is that this trend is not about to fade. Proof of this, we have just learned that Snapchat will be one of the first applications to take advantage of LiDAR that equips the high-end models of the series, that is to say the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone. 12 Pro Max.

Snapchat users on iPhone 12 Pro will get new LiDAR functionality

During the keynote presentation of the new smartphones, Apple did not fail to praise the merits of this sensor which has just been introduced on the iPhone.

Snapchat, to iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max LiDAR support

According to Apple, LiDAR will allow more advanced uses in the arena, including deeper immersion and faster focusing in low light. By becoming one of the first apps to harness the potential of the sensor, Snapchat will give us the ability to judge the effectiveness of the technology for ourselves.

Clearly, the LiDAR of the new iPhone will be more useful than that of the iPad Pro, which is used more in the workplace than for entertainment. Regarding the support that Snapchat has just announced through its vice president of the camera platform, it will provide space mesh information to allow filters (Lenses) to better understand the geometry of surfaces and objects around the user.

A new level of creativity

With this focus on harnessing the LiDAR sensor capability of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, Snapchat hopes, according to Eitan Pilipski, to achieve “A new level of creativity for augmented reality”.

With Lens Studio 3.2, users will be able to design their own filters. Note that it will also be possible to use this new Snapchat feature on the iPad Pro. Be aware, however, that it is not optimized for large screens. At least for the moment.
