Some 277,000 people miss work every day without justification

More than one million people miss work every day, of which an average of 770,000 do so due to temporary disability and 277,000 without justifying their absence, according to a study prepared by the human resources consultant Randstad.

The report, which uses data from the Quarterly Labor Cost Survey of the National Statistics Institute (INE), shows that total absenteeism resulted in the loss of 450 million hours of work in the first quarter of the year. This amount represents 5.2% of the total hours agreed, a rate that is reduced to 1.4% in the case of hours not justified.

Total absenteeism is higher in the services sector (5.4% of the agreed hours), ahead of the industrial sector (5.2%) and construction (3.3%).

Regarding activities, the lowest total absenteeism rates were in the sale and repair of motor vehicles (3.1%), architectural and engineering services (3.2%) and rental activities (3.2% ). At the other extreme, the highest total absenteeism rates include health activities (8.6%), building services and gardening activities (8.5%) and social services activities without accommodation (8.4 %).

By regions, the Basque Country (7.1%), Asturias (6.2%) and Galicia (5.8%) have been the regions where the highest rates of absenteeism were recorded during the first quarter of 2019, followed by Castilla y León (5.7%), Navarra and the Canary Islands (both with 5.5%), Catalonia (5.3%), Aragon (5.3%), Cantabria (5.2%) and Murcia (5.2%) . The regions with the lowest absenteeism were La Rioja (4.7%) and Balearic Islands (4%), below Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid (with 4.9%) and Comunidad Valenciana and Andalucía (4.8% ).

Regarding the unjustified (1.4%), the absenteeism rate was higher in the Basque Country (2.2%), Asturias (1.9%), Castilla y León, Aragón (both with 1.7%) and Catalonia (1.5%). With an absenteeism rate of 1.4% are Galicia, Extremadura, La Rioja and Comunidad Valenciana, while Navarra obtained 1.3%. They are followed, with 1.2% Madrid, Murcia, Canary Islands and Andalusia, and close the list Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria and Balearic Islands with 1.1%. .
