The Sony WH-1000XM4, the long-awaited update of the best WH-1000XM3 in the class, was kept strictly by Sony. No official details, no official release dates. Nada.
That’s not to say we don’t have any information on WH-1000XM4, however. Thanks to several leaks, we have put together a photo of these new over-the-ear headphones.
Here is everything we know so far.
Almost identical design
Thanks to a deposit with Anatel, a Brazilian telecommunications agency, we have an idea of what the WH-1000XM4 will look like. The design, we are happy to report it, is not that new. When we got our hands on the WH-1000XM3 for the inaugural review of the product, the slim profile, the feeling of lightness and the comfortable fit stood out. From the photos included in the store, the upcoming WH-1000XM4 looks similar to their predecessors, which is fine for us.
Even better battery life
The Sony WH-1000XM3 was charged with 30 hours of battery life and an exceptionally fast charging time which resulted in five hours of playback after 10 minutes of charging. It was an impressive feat, to say the least, and the new headphones could raise the bar.
According to the same filing, the XM4 headphones should last 10 hours of autonomy, bringing the total playing time to 40 hours. In addition, reportedly, nominal power consumption will drop from 8 W to 2 W from XM3 to XM4, respectively.
The price is still a mystery
We have no losses or suggestions that lead to pricing information for the Sony WH-1000XM4 and, with the lack of other information related to these headphones, you can expect. The Sony WH-1000XM3 sold at a price of $ 350 when they came out, and looks like a solid north star for the next edition. It would take a lot of additional features to justify a significant $ 350 price hike and the XM4 would likely lose some key features if Sony offered them at a cheaper price.
This leaves us at a recommended price similar to the Xm3, which honestly seems to be the weak point between the assembly of stellar features and an incredible sound in a pair of headphones that remain within an affordable price range.
Sony has not announced an official release date for these new headphones. But we have an educated theory of when these cans will be revealed to the world.
If the story is indicative, we believe you can look forward to the release of WH-1000XM4 before IFA 2020, set for September 4-9 in Berlin – assuming it won’t be canceled due to coronavirus concerns. WH-1000XM3 was released in the same time frame for IFA 2018 and won the best wireless headphones award at the show that year.
Again, Sony has not confirmed a specific date to release these headphones. Until we know otherwise, we will bet on IFA 2020.
Some desired updates
Officially, we don’t know much else about the XM4. However, we know what we would like to see from these new headphones. The main of these promising updates would be the ability to connect to more than one device at a time.
With the XM3, that was one of our only complaints with an otherwise superb pair of headphones. If Sony is able to add that feature while holding on to the traits that made the XM3 great, they may have another winner in their hands.
