Remembering Matthew Wzorek: the Marple Township community comes together to remember the child who died of the flu

MARPLE TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – The death of second-grade Matthew Wzorek from what are believed to be flu-like complications has severely affected his community in Marple Township.

“Extremely saddened by Matthew’s loss and how sudden he is and how it happened because Matthew was a healthy boy,” said Melanie Tammaro.

Tammaro and others organized the vigil held on Sunday at the Worrall Elementary.

The second pupil appeared to be the first pediatric death from influenza in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Their latest data showed nearly 85,000 confirmed cases of flu and 54 flu-related deaths this season.

Wzorek reportedly had a flu B case and passed away last week.

The Marple Newtown school district issued a statement stating that “he liked being with friends he was always willing to offer assistance to his teachers and colleagues.”

Matthew’s teacher was also diagnosed with the same virus strain that remained at home.

School officials told Action News that the district was in a classroom of alarm and disinfection on a daily basis because of great concern.

“Very happy boy, very happy boy,” said organizer Lauren Mcateer. “He always smiled,” he added.
