With considerable delay, without a joint communiqué and in a strange environment, the 2020 San Isidro Fair “is suspended” one month after the world has stopped

The Community of Madrid and Plaza 1 have made the suspension of San Isidro official although they leave “a door open for the season”, as confirmed by this newspaper Rafael Garca Garrido, managing director of Nautalia and main partner of the Las Ventas company, the most obvious scoop in history.

Despite the fact that the mayor of Madrid, Martnez Almeida, has suspended “all the festivals and festivals” of the city until November, Garca Garrido does not consider the bullfighting season canceled. The company held a telematic meeting on Wednesday with the vice-presidential adviser, Miguel Angel Garca. “The season is not suspended. We will see what we can do depending on what Health says “, warns Garca Garrido.

The Community of Madrid points out that together with the company “it has opened a period of reflection in order to face the rest of the season. Any decision related to the scheduling of bullfighting shows in Las Ventas in 2020 will be made under the principle of prudence and a Once the time and manner in which public shows, including bullfighting, can be held again, are determined with certainty for the fans. “

Sporting events such as Wimbledon or the Olympics or international festivals such as the Octoberfest have been suspended, but the Otoo Fair has a slim chance of surviving the escapade from the coronavirus. How do you explain it? “We really don’t know anything. If there are minimum conditions on August 15, we will get to work on it,” warns Garca Garrido. Behind this surreal scenario, which would make Madrid’s bullfighting season the only essential mass show on the planet, is the labyrinth of the sheet. Neither side wants to risk entering into a direct confrontation. They walk around, matching the suspensions with the royal decrees approved by Congress, observing legality to the millimeter.

With considerable delay, without a joint statement and in a strange environment, the 2020 San Isidro Fair “is suspended” one month after the world has been paralyzed.

With the exception of Nimes, all the French towns that give bulls demand in one document measures to alleviate the crisis of the pandemic. “In Spain, Culture is not going to do anything for the sector,” says Andr Viard

The Union of Bullfighting Cities of France has sent a statement to the Macron Government demanding a series of measures to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus crisis in the French bullfighting sector. This entity groups all the bull-giving cities in France except Nimes. “Casas wanted to get out 12 years ago. A run by Palha tested positive for shaving. The Union has an amateur commission that controls this type of thing. I decided to get out“explains the representative of the group, Andr Viard.

One of the Union’s initiatives has been to demand 0% VAT from the Government of France. “We asked for this measure a month ago, when Arls was suspended. We thought that in September they would start giving bulls again, but now I am a bit pessimistic. If bullfighting shows do not happen again in 2020, this demand will fall on deaf ears.“says Viard, who compares the French bullfighting sector, smaller than in Spain, to the other cultural activities that take place in his country.

As in Spain, French farmers will suffer the consequences of the parn. “A number of mechanisms can be activated in Agriculture to alleviate losses in exceptional circumstances. Among them, being able to harvest hay or grass on land that cannot be done now. Europe freezes some land to control prices. In some cases that product can be harvested again. Ranchers who have no cost to feed the bulls will benefit. ”

Many French professionals are enrolled in the Spanish regime. They pay their taxes in Spain. “They are the weakest group. It is what is most urgent in Spain. Their situation is precarious.” Andr Viard has asked for those who are still in France “continue to charge according to their 2019 prices. They are in the same section as the other artists who, due to their conditions, work intermittently. ”

He does not believe that Culture is capable of solving the crisis in the bullfighting sector. “They are not going to do anything. The objective of this Government is to end the bulls. They are not going to ban them, because they are not capable, but they are going to let them die. The situation is perfect. Also, with some requests that have come their way, which are bungling and spoil the rest, they will have an easier time putting themselves in profile. “

PETA’s animalists offer 250,000 euros and ‘boloencierros’ if they eradicate Sanfermines forever

They also offer Pamplona, in a letter to the mayor, ‘inflatable’ bulls while 12,000 fighting bulls from the Cabaa Brava will inevitably go to the slaughterhouse

The organizationPETA international animalist(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sent this Thursday a letter to the mayor of Pamplona, Enrique Maya, in which he offers 250,000 euros to the city if he agrees to eradicate Sanfermines and their subsequent bullfights forever, according to reports Servimedia. Faced with the 142 million economic impact generated by the San Fermn festivities, PETA’s supply remains slightly scarce. They also complete their offer with inflatable bulls while 12,000 fighting bulls go to the slaughterhouse. Fuente Ymbro, one of the ranchers announced at the suspended Bull Fair, has already announced that it will reduce by 50% and send 700 heads of wild cattle to the death rooms, as if they were tame.

PETA has carried out this measure after the town hall of Pamplonica announced last Tuesday that this year’s Sanfermines were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, disease caused by the new coronavirus.

“With the bullfighting industry in serious financial trouble and the growing opposition to the exploitation of animals for entertainment, I hope you agree that it is high time thatPamplona put an end to this cruel and archaic show“said Ingrid Newkirk, founder of PETA.

In his letter to the mayor, to which Servimedia had access, Newkirk indicates that the running of the bulls and bullfights are “a holdover from a much less enlightened age, in which people do not understand that animals feel pain and it did not matter to put the safety of their fellow humans at risk. “

“Society has evolved. Today, most people around the world are opposed to what happens in bull running and they hate bullfighting. More than 125 Spanish provinces and cities have recognized that tormenting and sacrificing bulls for Entertainment has no place in the 21st century and they have rejected such barbarism, “he adds.

Later, Newkirk highlights: “With the bullfighting industry in serious financial problems andThe growing opposition to the exploitation of animals for entertainment, I hope you agree that it is time to add Pamplona to that list. “

The founder of PETA stresses that the Sanfermines also generate “protests by women’s rights groups due to the large number of incidents of sexual assault, rape and other forms of violence reported during this pathetic annual exhibition of machismo.”

“This is your time to do the right thing and be globally praised for putting Pamplona in the foreground and for good reason. There are countless fun, non-violent activities that revelers could enjoy to celebrate the San Fermn festival. In addition to the festivities and parades in honor of the patron saint, some cities are adopting a new tradition, the ‘boloencierro’. “

Newkirk alludes to giant 200-kilogram balls falling down the hills as festival goers rush to run past them or get out of their way. “People have described it as an ‘Indiana Jones-style adventure.’ There are no protests, just cheers!”

Note that other cities use ‘inflatable bulls’who “gobble” the runners with their inflatable horns while the crowd dies with laughter “, as well as people inside” inflatable balls that chase the thrill seekers “or” roller-derby “teams with plastic bats on the streets.

We hope you acceptour offer. Together, we can start planning a San Fermn festival for 2021 in which everyone, including animals and their protectors, will applaud, “the letter concludes.

Victoriano de la Serna, the revolution of ‘intransitive bullfighting’

His bullfighting had no transfer or teaching possible. To fight like La Serna you had to be La Serna, said Alameda. Its release was a cataclysm like that of Juan Belmonte.

A unique character in the history of bullfighting. A brilliant artist. A self-taught man who felt the call of bullfighting while studying Medicine. His creative concerns had led him to take an interest in the bull and that is why he participated in a festival that supported the initiative of King Alfonso XIII to build the University City in 1928.Victoriano de la Serna(Seplveda, 1908) he found himself when he threw all the cape in front to fight the vernica to that young bull that changed his life. A way of understanding layering bullfighting that revolutionized its time and that still impacts today. All the flight of the cape and the whole chest of the bullfighter facing, the figure erect and bulky. Low hands in the deep cast. The maximum purity of the Silver Age of Bullfighting.

He left his studies in Medicine in his fourth career, although he practiced during the Civil War as a military doctor in Pamplona, to focus on the bull. On August 27, 1931 he appeared at Las Ventas. It was a shock. His personal capotero style and his unique muletera personality showed him as a complete artist in that Madrid hatching. With 13 novilladas and empowered by the Black Pope, he took the alternative in October of the same year in Madrid from the hands ofFlix Rodrguezand in the presence of Pepe Bienvenida.

The late vocation of Victoriano de la Serna was not the fruit of necessity as he explained: I did not get to bullfight for money or hunger or even desire for glory. Bullfighting has been for me a mystique, the expression of my personality. With that philosophy I interpreted an improvised bullfighting.Martial LalandaHe said that Victoriano fought like the rest of us used to bullfight.

Her veronica was unlike any other.Robert RyanI wrote in your bookThe bullfighting of capa: There are milestones in bullfighting for vernicas, sets that last withforce of mythLiterally counted: the four that in Madrid, in the spring of 1932, consecrated Victoriano de la Serna; four that, as far as the astonishment that they caused, have as paragon the five without amendment of Belmonte in 1913.

“She wears silver, which accentuated the verticality of her figure almost facing the bull with her light (…) Victoriano had the extraordinary virtue of eliminating all superfluous movement from vernica,” wrote Pepe Ortiz.

Pepe Ortiz, the great Mexican creator, goldsmith of capoteras luck, remembered them five years later: Vesta de plata, which accentuated with the light the verticality of his figure almost faced with the bull (…) Victoriano had the extraordinary virtue of eliminating the vernica all superfluous movement. He performed the cast far ahead, moving only his arms and then neither they; in the last time of the cast only with the waist. That miracle atmosphere on the sand was the revolution. Or whatPepe Alamedabaptized as intransitive bullfighting. Because it has no transfer or teaching possible, since in order to carry it out, knowledge of a mechanism is worthless, you need personal genius, the prodigious, non-transferable measure that allows you to stay there, without modifying the terrain. To fight like La Serna you had to be La Serna, Alameda said in his essential workThe heterodox of bullfighting.

His career was marked by his strong character. In 1936, in full conflict with the Spanish-Mexican agreement, he decided to confront the Madrid public who reproached the Spaniards for not fighting with Mexicans. To defend the honor of ours, Victoriano de la Serna confronted the fans, nailed to his knees in front of the bull of Clairac and summoned to let himself be caught by the cry ofLong live Spain!. Domingo Ortega and Manolo Bienvenida stupefiedly attended the scene.

In Villagarca de Arosa he lived one of the most exciting episodes of his life. Surrounded by his gang after the bullfight, Victoriano de la Serna smoked quietly in the hotel hall. As if attracted by a magnetic force, he was magnetized by a look reflected in a large mirror and said: Gentlemen, I just saw the woman in my life for the first time. A young woman of Turkish origin and daughter of a diplomat who was spending the summer with her family in Galicia:Virginia Ernst. And married her. Some time later Victoriano managed to buy that mirror in which love was forged. Garca Mrquez was inspired by this true story to talk about Fermina Daza’s mirror inLove in times of the clergy. The mirror was indeed Virginia’s.

Ruano Llopis was inspired by the task that she gave her on July 25, 1934 in Valencia. In her was born the painting and the passing of flowers. Or vice versa. Llopis immortalized the muletazo from behind with some flowers falling from the line. And the bouquet gave name to the creation of La Serna. In thatSan Jaime FairI tore four of the five runs that make up the serial.

Like so many figures, the Civil War broke his career. He retired in 1944. AVicente Zabala, his son-in-law, confessed to him in the book The Old Colossi of Bullfighting Speak: I did not need to teach the braces to be able to deal with the bulls. That unbridled bull from the 1930s. Marcial also recognized that he pruned more than he said when he was wrong, in the low peaks of his volcanic irregularity.

On May 22, 1981 he ended his existence by his own hand.I followed the path of Belmonte. His precepts in the ring and his farewell in life.

Rafael de Paula, a miraculous ‘complaint’

Wednesday,
fifteen
April
2020

12:01

The gypsy from Jerez who gave bronze sounds to the beat of his grimaces as a sublimation of veronica

The beautiful and fragile veronica of Rafael de Paula
JESS

As a complain appeared Rafael de Paula in bullfighting. A torn and felt scream that marked a way of understanding life. A historical irruption that was experienced on a smaller scale the afternoon that Paula fought. Their grimaces gave life to the cape from which a silky flight arose that tempered the animal power. Reduce the onslaught through beauty. Invite to surrender to the bull through the artistic delivery of the bullfighter.

They say that Paula was a pinch bullfighter. Rafael de Paula (Jerez de la Frontera, 1940), with his lights and shadows, was a cult bullfighter. His career was riddled with ups and downs, but also with artistic content. Fans found in Paula the refuge of a unique bullfighter. A knee injury that dragged his entire life since 1978 prevented him from developing his full potential as a bullfighter.

Lighting in the neighborhood of Santiago de Jerez, being a child Rafael felt the call of bullfighting. Those who saw him grow tell that with a cloak in his hand he was transformed. His shyness disappeared when he dreamed of being a bullfighter. The artist’s metamorphosis. Its discoverer was Bernardo Muoz Carnicerito de Mlaga, who years later would become his father-in-law.

Legend has it that Juan Belmonte he was so impressed to see him fight once on his house Fermn Bohrquez that from time to time he would send his driver to Jerez to bring the “boy from the Santiago neighborhood” to his Gmez Cardea farm. Those experiences at Belmonte’s house contributed so much to Paula that the three saints who commanded her chapel throughout her life were: Juan Belmonte, Cagancho and Antonio Ordez.

Rafael de Paula claimed dressed in lights that bullfighting goes far beyond dominating a bull. The Jerez man was able to transmit with his cape and his crutch the deepest feelings of his intimacy. His torn sensitivity found in bullfighting the most sincere way to express himself.

With his incomparable purity and his particular way of conceiving bullfighting, it is difficult to understand that after achieving success as a bullfighter it took him six years to present himself as a bullfighter in Seville and 14 years to confirm the alternative in Madrid. In 1960, he obtained a doctorate in Ronda, the place where he had put on his first light suit three years ago. Those early seasons of matador were based on its corner squares, such as El Puerto de Santa Mara, Sanlcar de Barrameda or Jerez de la Frontera, among others.

Gypsy for all four cost. A real fraud for the gypsies. Those years in the corner he developed his bullfighting without physical limitations. An artistic heyday that led him to fight two bullfights as the only sword: one in El Puerto and the other in Jerez. The explosion of feelings on those afternoons earned him an immense gang of supporters. All the gypsies identified with their way of understanding art, of interpreting it. Rafael de Paula has been the maximum exponent of lime art, even above the great flamingos. His introverted character did not lead him to be a regular at flamenco parties but he knew that the greatest artists followed him.

In an interview Rafael de Paula himself said: “I am not a normal gypsy. I do not touch my palms, I do not sing, nor do I dance, but I always felt very artist in front of the bulls.” When he traveled, he relaxed listening to classical music. He is more in favor of Mairena than of Caracol. He is still excited with the Paquera de Jerez.

His career had a turning point in the year 1974. A quarrel by vernicas against toriles drove the demanding fans of Las Ventas crazy. A heartbreaking remove from the gypsy who, 34 years old, confirmed his alternative that afternoon. A vindication taken away from his personality, from all the sentiment contained in that corner of the south for 14 years.

Jos Bergamn wrote The silent music of bullfighting after his performance in the Plaza de Vistalegre in Madrid. Perhaps that was the most complete work by Rafael de Paula. The afternoon that made him a myth.

The impact was so great that the following year he had 40 bullfights signed. Two splendid seasons were brought to a halt by the fateful knee injury at Bayonne in 1978. Unsuccessful operations, continued fatigue before bulls, and increasingly common personal and professional scandals precipitated a long decline.

Even so, only Rafael de Paula was able to reach the soul of the fans with his veronica. Each cast became a miracle because of its fragility. He had difficulties leaving the bull’s face, which caused him tremendous insecurity and for which he suffered an authentic ordeal when it came to killing. Even so, there were indelible works, with the deep imprint of their pain, of their authenticity. Like that take-off in Aranjuez, the magnificent work on top of Martnez Benavides in Madrid or so many chores in Jerez, as well as hundreds of details at the stroke of feeling.

Rafael de Paula has been a responsible bullfighter despite what many might think. Tidy, methodical in his training, careful with his tackle. He suffered tremendously after the runs by analyzing what he had done and thinking about what he could have done with better physical abilities. He retired in the year 2000. Bullfighting is orphaned by an irreplaceable feeling.

Facebook removes the page of the Madrid Bull Association with almost 100,000 followers: “We live an animalist dictatorship”

“We do not know anything about the suspension of San Isidro, the Community and the company tell us nothing,” says Roberto Yuste, president of the entity of subscribers to Las Ventas

Madrid line 7
Javier Martnez

The Facebook page of the Madrid Bull Association has been canceled. “We hope that they have not completely eliminated it, to see if they have only suspended us“says Roberto Yuste, the president of the entity that brings together some of the subscribers to Las Ventas, almost all grouped together in line 7 of the plaza.” The same thing has happened to us with YouTube, “he recalls.”Now they blame us that the content could be fraudulent or that corresponds to an illegal activity. ”

Facebook has sent an email to the page administrator El Toro Association of Madrid. According to the company, the content of fans could “violate the Terms of Service” and recommends “review the rest of the published content”. It warns that “repeated misuse” could make the page disappear permanently.

After complaining, Zuckerberg’s company has responded to them along the same lines. Either they stop uploading fraudulent content, the bullfighting, or they run out of pages. “We already had almost 100,000 followers. Let’s upload gatherings, reports, historical tasks. There was a very interesting file “that could be infringing some copyright rule.” When we came up with Youtube we lost a lot of things. Now we have a hard disk where we kept that material. We lose a lot, but not everything. “

“A fat stick”

For Roberto Yuste, fans live on social networks “a dictatorship of animalists. They only listen to them. They contribute less. They only twitch. And they go against us“He observes. He believes that Facebook’s decision could be related to his complaints.” We are very angry. An aluvin will have arrived. I do not know exactly the number of complaints they have made but they have had to be many. They gave us a big stick. ”

In addition to the complaints, the Association’s page also receives insults. The inbox is full of hate messages. “I don’t know if they will be fake profiles. Many of them are foreigners. They left tremendous comments in the posts. They call us ‘murderers’ or wish us death ‘by coronavirus’. And we get insults in private messages. “

For Las Ventas subscribers, the season continues. “They haven’t told us anything about San Isidro yet. They have us uninformed. It is a strange silence, but from the works that are being carried out in the plaza. They haven’t told us anything. There is not the same communication that we had with Taurodelta. ”

They had already purchased tickets for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, the first two bullfights of the year in Madrid. “We don’t know when the money will be returned to us. We buy the tickets taking advantage of the discount that we have the subscribers. They haven’t said anything about the return. ”

Sources of the company consulted by this newspaper indicate that “all the tickets that were purchased electronically have been returned. As soon as possible, we will proceed to return those that were purchased at the box office.”
