BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – At least 6 forest fires have occurred in various areas of Baguio and Benguet this week.
The lack of rain and eastern winds fueled these fires, which mainly affected uninhabited areas.
The biggest was the forest fire that hit the city of Kabayan in Benguet. It started on 11 February in Barangay Adaoay and continued to burn 150 hectares until it was finally checked on 15 February.
Despite the scale of the fire, only one abandoned house in the village of Anchokey was razed to the ground.
On February 19, another forest fire destroyed at least 20 hectares of forest in Sitio Nalseb, Barangay Ambassador, in Tublay, Benguet.
In addition to the pines, also razed to the ground there were some electric poles that crossed the area.
On Friday, February 21, the Baguio Fire Protection Office (BFP) contained a forest fire in South Drive.
Subsequently, they also contained a grass fire in Sitio Cawat in Barangay Beckel, La Trinidad.
On Thursday 20 February, BFP Baguio also launched another grass fire in Barangay Dontogan.
A forest fire was seen on Saturday morning, February 22 in the Bokod area of Benguet. Another was seen around 6:00 pm in Loacan, Itogon, Benguet.
