Wuhan authorities reveal details of newly discovered cases of COVID-19

BEIJING, May 10 – RIA Novosti. The 89-year-old elderly man turned out to be the newest case of coronavirus infection in Wuhan, which became the focus of COVID-19, in addition, 16 asymptomatic people were also identified in the city per day, according to a report from the Wuhan Health Committee.

No new infections were reported in Wuhan after April 4, Wuhan was recognized as a low-threat area on April 18, and the last patient with coronavirus infection was discharged from the city hospital on April 26.

However, earlier on Sunday, the State Health Committee of China announced that in Wuhan, a new case of infection has been identified over the past 24 hours, as well as 16 asymptomatic cases.

According to the Wuhan City Health Committee, the disease turned out to be an 89-year-old elderly man who suffers from hypertension and also polycystic. It is reported that after January 25, he did not leave the residential complex in which he lives. On March 17, he had a fever, chills, for 10 days the man took the medicine at home, after which the symptoms disappeared, did not seek medical help, on April 15 the patient lost his appetite, and on May 6, accompanied by the housekeeping staff, the man was taken to the hospital, where he they did a nucleic acid test, on May 7 came the test results, which turned out to be positive, on May 9 a second test also turned out to be positive, the doctors diagnosed coronavirus infection.

The test for the nucleic acid of the patient’s wife turned out to be positive, and the daughter’s test was negative, both have no symptoms. The wife was qualified as asymptomatic infected.

In the residential complex where the patient lived, 20 confirmed cases of infection with COVID-19 were previously registered, according to experts, the source of infection was most likely the previous cases.

After the man confirmed the diagnosis, the experts conducted an epidemiological investigation, during which five more asymptomatic infected were identified in a residential complex.

In total, over the past day, in 16 different areas of the city, 16 asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus infection were detected.

The Chinese authorities do not include in the general statistics of asymptomatic carriers in which the tests for nucleic viral acid are positive, but have no symptoms, and re-qualify them only when they show symptoms.

Currently, 616 asymptomatic carriers of the virus remain under the supervision of doctors throughout Hubei.

During the epidemic in Hubei, 68 129 cases of infection were detected (50 334 – Wuhan), 63 616 recovered (46 464), 4 512 died (3 869 in Wuhan).

Cradle of the virus? The world wonders what the Wuhan Scientific Laboratory hides

Located among the hills surrounding the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the new coronavirus emerged, a Chinese biotechnology laboratory became the center of a global controversy. According to Chinese scientists, the SARS-Cov2 coronavirus could have passed from the animal to the man in the market “Huanan“, which sold live animals in Wuhan. But the existence of this laboratory encourages speculation that the virus came out of there: what is it hiding?

The United States does not believe that the virus is linked to biological weapons research, or that it has been bioengineered. And the scientific community is also inclined towards a virus derived from animals and not from test tubes, as demonstrated by the structure of Covid-19. But the US government does not exclude that there was an “incident” that caused him to leave the laboratory, perhaps due to incorrect or inadequate handling of the materials that infected some employees.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a “full investigation” is being carried out on how the virus “came out into the world.” “What we know is that this virus was born in Wuhan and that the Wuhan Virology Institute is only a few kilometers away from the open market,” added Pompeo, who recently accused the Chinese Communist Party of having hidden and manipulated a lot of data.

What is the Wuhan Institute of Virology?

The institute houses the Virus Culture Center, the largest virus bank in Asia where more than 1,500 varieties are preserved, according to its website. Within the complex is Asia’s first laboratory for high security capable of handling class 4 (P4) pathogens, that is, dangerous viruses that are transmitted from person to person, such as Ebola.

The laboratory cost 300 million yuan ($ 42 million) and was completed in 2015, although it was not opened until 2018. French Alain Merieux, founder of a bio-industrial company, advised on its construction. The 3,000 m2 P4 laboratory is located within a square building with a cylindrical annex, near a pond at the foot of a forested hill on the outskirts of Wuhan.

Is the laboratory the origin of the coronavirus?

The newspaper The Washington Post and the chain Fox News They cited anonymous sources claiming that the virus could have accidentally left the complex. According to diplomatic documents that the American newspaper was able to consult, the authorities were concerned about the inadequate security of the investigators when handling viruses similar to SARS.

The concern was such that the scientists who alerted their superiors, the newspaper wrote. The Washington Post, on the deficiencies in the management and security of the Chinese laboratory, and proposed offering more attention and help not only because of the importance of studies on bat coronaviruses, but also because of their danger.

In accordance with Fox NewsThe “patient zero” of the pandemic could have been infected by a variety of bat viruses that were being studied in the laboratory and then passed on to the Wuhan population. When asked about this hypothesis, the American President, Donald Trump said that “we are increasingly hearing this story” and that the United States was conducting an “in-depth investigation”.

The institute declined to comment on these theories on Friday, but in February released a statement about it, rejecting the rumors. His authorities explained having received the new coronavirus, then unknown, on December 30. Then, on January 2, he determined the sequence of the viral genome and submitted the information on the pathogen to the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 11.

For his part, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Friday rejected allegations that the laboratory was responsible: “A knowledgeable person will soon understand that the intention is to create confusion, divert public attention and shirk their responsibility “said Zhao, who in turn promoted rumors that the US military could have brought the virus to China.

“None of the investigators became infected,” said Yuan Zhiming., head of that center. “And the entire institute is conducting research in various areas related to the coronavirus,” he said.

What do scientists know about the coronavirus?

Scientists believe the virus appeared in a bat and passed to man through an intermediate species, probably the pangolin, but a study by a group of Chinese scientists, published in the journal January. The Lancet, reveals that the first COVID-19 patient had no connection to the Wuhan animal market13 of the first 41 patients did not have it either.

Shi Zhengli, a leading Chinese expert on bat coronavirus and deputy director of the P4 laboratory, was part of the team that published the first study suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 (the official name of the virus) came from bats. In an interview with the magazine Scientific american, Shi said that the SARS-CoV-2 genome does not match any of the bat coronaviruses that his laboratory studied so far.

According Filippa Lentzos, a biosecurity researcher at King’s College LondonAlthough there is no evidence on the theory of the accident in the laboratory, there is also no “real evidence” that the virus came from the market. “For me, the origin of the pandemic is still an unanswered question,” he said.

The virus is believed originated from one of Wuhan’s many wildlife markets at the end of last year, but the peculiar thing is that the place did not sell bats, nor food based on them. The disease that it unleashes, called Covid-19 and that impacts mainly on the respiratory tract of humans, so far has caused more than 160 thousand deaths worldwide and more than two million 300 thousand infections.

Who sows the wind reaps the whirlwind. Standing behind his desk, Zhao Lijian looks tense this April 16, assailed by questions from the international press during the daily briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. “I remind you that the WHO has indicated that there is no scientific evidence that the virus comes from a laboratory,” said the spokesman, defensively. The young hawk of Chinese diplomacy is trying to deflate the controversy he helped fuel a month earlier with an explosive tweet. “The US military may have brought the epidemic to Wuhan. The United States owes us an explanation! ”, had then posted Zhao to its 300,000 subscribers on the platform, censored in China. The message angered Donald Trump, who insisted on talking about the “Chinese virus” at a press conference, fanning the anger of the second world power.

In China, immense psychological distress among medical personnel

Chinese doctors and nurses dealing with the Covid-19 epidemic have dramatically high levels of mental distress. This finding, worrying for our own healthcare system, is that of researchers who surveyed the mental health of 1,250 healthcare workers working in hospitals mainly located in the Chinese province of Hubei, the most affected by the epidemic.

The investigation, carried out by means of questionnaires validated by the health authorities, took place in the middle of a crisis between January 29 and February 3. “During this period, the number of confirmed cases [de Covid-19] has exceeded 10,000 in China “, specify the authors, researchers in the departments of psychiatry of the hospitals of Wuhan and Hangzhou.

Nearly 70% of health professionals, the majority aged 26 to 40, participated in the research. Among them, write the scientists, “A significant proportion reported symptoms of depression (50%), anxiety (44%), insomnia (34%) and stress (71%)”. Women in nursing practice, on average, more severe mental health problems. Being directly involved in the diagnosis, treatment or care of Covid-19 patients, particularly in Wuhan, is also a serious risk factor. Fatigue related to overwork, as well as the fear of being infected and of infecting loved ones, explain this distress in particular.

Objective signs

The Chinese study, published March 23 in the scientific journal Jama , acted as a detonator for French psychiatrists. “If we do not take this dimension into account effectively, we incur great damage, underlines the Dr Fayçal Mouaffak, head of the psychiatry unit at Ville-Évrard Hospital (Seine-Saint-Denis). In the short term, the challenge is enormous for the healthcare system, which is entirely based on healthcare professionals. In the long term, it is their mental health that is at stake: caregivers are now caught in the middle of the action, but a backlash is to be feared. “

Exposure to acute distress increases the risk of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The phenomenon is increased in case of preexisting fragility. However, the Chinese study estimates that 35% of the caregivers suffering from mental illnesses.

The approach of Chinese psychiatrists inspired the establishment, at Ville-Évrard Hospital, of more energetic support for caregivers within the services. “Because healthcare professionals find it difficult to recognize their disorder, it is crucial to help them identify their symptoms without waiting for them to ask for help”, note the Dr Mouaffak. Questionnaires, which notably assess objective signs such as difficulty sleeping or loss of appetite, constitute an interesting tool to trigger awareness before undertaking therapeutic work.

Caregivers are not the only ones affected by this psychological distress, however. Responsible for disinfecting rooms, stretchers and medical equipment, without a thorough knowledge of the disease, hospital maintenance workers often live in terror of bringing the virus home. As for the mortuary teams, “They suffer enormously from having to mourn the loss of families that they have not been able to support”, alarms the psychiatrist.

I don’t understand hate

AThe day Fang Wuhan announced the lifting of the curfew, Fang Fang wrote the last entry in her diary. For 60 days, the writer documented life and death in the closed city in a blog. Throughout China, hundreds of thousands of people read and commented on their daily observations from the epicenter of the epidemic. Many Chinese found consolation in the fact that Fang Fang’s texts gave human suffering to suffering in Wuhan.

That she wrote about brave doctors and volunteers as about people next door – and not as if they were unreachable heroes to whom government propaganda wanted to exaggerate. Fang Fang gave voice to the anger of many citizens because it called for clarification of the political failings in the early stages of the Corona outbreak. “As witnesses who have witnessed the tragic days of Wuhan, we are obliged to call for justice for those who have died,” she wrote in her last diary entry. Otherwise, the city will be stained with “the shame of forgetting”.

Wuhan has been cordoned off for almost eleven weeks. Nobody was allowed to leave the Chinese city where the Corona crisis started. But now the exit ban is falling. These are the first pictures.

NAfter the lifting of a more than two-month ban on leaving due to the corona pandemic, thousands of people made their way out of the central Chinese city of Wuhan. Crowds flocked to Wuchang station early Wednesday morning (local time). It is expected that tens of thousands of residents will leave the city by train during the day.

The world’s first cases of infection with the novel corona virus were reported from the industrial metropolis at the end of December. The capital of the province of Hubei was the first Chinese city to be completely closed off on January 23 due to the spread of the pathogen; later almost the entire province followed.

The situation has since eased and since the end of March the Chinese authorities have gradually stopped the foreclosure measures. For Wuhan, however, an exit ban continued to apply initially.

At the official end of the lockdown, skyscrapers and bridges were illuminated with pictures of doctors and nurses who looked after patients. “Heroic City” was one of the pictures, a title given by Chinese President Xi Jinping Wuhan. On the banks of the Yangtze River, citizens waved Chinese flags and shouted “Wuhan, let’s go”. Some say the Chinese national anthem.

Within a short time, the traffic flowed almost as before over the reopened bridges and through tunnels. Not only did queues form at the train station, but also at the airport. Many now wanted to return to their jobs elsewhere. So far, this was not possible due to the travel ban.

The strict foreclosure of the city was lifted because the spread of Sars-CoV-2 is officially controlled there. No new death was registered for the first time anywhere in China on Tuesday.

Despite loosening the corona measures, the citizens of Wuhan continue to protect themselves

The movements of the eleven million inhabitants as well as their health and any possible contact with infected people will continue to be monitored via a mandatory smartphone app even after Wuhan has opened. In addition, the temperature is still measured in many places and access to residential areas is restricted.

In China, according to official figures, more than 81,000 people contracted the new corona virus and over 3,300 people died. Most cases were registered in Hubei.

Most recently, the Chinese authorities have tightened measures against people arriving from abroad – for fear of a second wave of infections.

Number of infected people in Germany and worldwide

Dusseldorf A slight drop in the number of deaths has given the US state of New York, which has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, some encouragement. Overall, the number of deaths from Covid-19 patients rose to nearly 4,200, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday. After 630 deaths from Friday to Saturday, 594 people infected with the virus died in the following 24 hours. Admissions of critically ill people in intensive care units were also declining and discharge from hospital treatment had increased.

That gave a spark of hope that the spread of the virus would slow, Cuomo said. However, it was still too early to say whether the pandemic in New York had reached its peak. “We can be very close to the summit, but the summit could also be a plateau on which we have now arrived,” said the governor. “The corona virus is really malicious. It is an effective killer. People who are most at risk must remain isolated and protected. ”

New York City, where the greatest number of deaths were reported, also declined. By late Sunday afternoon (local time), the death toll increased by 218 from the previous day, local authorities said. 387 new deaths were reported on Saturday, 305 on Friday.

US President Donald Trump was cautiously optimistic about the development of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. “We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Trump said in Washington. “But you can never be happy when so many people die.” He hopes that the “flattening” of the Corona crisis will show up in some of the country’s hot spots.

By contrast, head of the public health system, Jerome Adams, warned that the pandemic would continue to spread in the coming days. Most Americans are facing “the hardest and the saddest week,” he said on Fox News. “This will be our Pearl Harbor moment, our September 11th, but it won’t be limited to one place. It will happen across the country.” Government experts estimate that between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans could die in the pandemic. To date, more than 9,500 people have been killed in the United States, and more than 335,000 have been tested positive.

In a New York zoo, a tiger was tested positive for the new corona virus. In addition to the four-year-old female named Nadia, three other tigers and three lions also had disease symptoms, said the zoo in the Bronx district. It is the first known infection in a tiger worldwide and the first time that the disease has been detected in an animal in the USA. According to the zoo, the wild cats were infected by an animal keeper who at the time had no symptoms of infection with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. However, health authorities assume that domestic dogs and cats cannot transmit the virus back to humans.

The economic crisis comes to the health catastrophe. The far-reaching consequences of the pandemic also reveal the weaknesses of the American economic and social system: the social system, corporations and politics. (Read the great U.S. special here.)

The further situation at a glance:

  • In Germany are by Monday morning at least according to Johns Hopkins University numbers 1,584 people, who were infected with the new corona virus died. The number of confirmed cases exceeded the 100,000 mark: more than 100,100 infections with Sars-CoV-2 were registered.
  • The Robert Koch Institute counted 1434 victims of lung disease Covid-19 in Germany on Monday morning. The number of deaths increased by around 92 compared to the previous day. The number of infections rose by 3,677 to 95,391 cases.
Have particularly high numbers Bavaria with 24,974 documented cases and almost 437 deaths and North Rhine-Westphalia with 19,384 cases and over 250 deaths, show the numbers of the RKI. You can see the current figures for your state and district in the tables on our map below:

  • Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (both SPD) have spoken out in favor of joint European aid measures in the fight against the corona pandemic. They counted as instruments in a joint guest contribution for several European newspapers Euro rescue fund ESM, the European Investment Bank EIB as well as the program proposed by the EU Commission “Sure”which, like in Germany, is intended to finance short-time work in the Member States. The euro finance ministers are discussing possible instruments this Tuesday.
  • Of the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson went to the hospital on Sunday evening for medical examinations on medical advice. “This is a precaution because the prime minister shows persistent symptoms of the virus ten days after his positive corona test,” said a government spokesman. Johnson is therefore still at an elevated temperature. Johnson had continued to quarantine government affairs in the past few days.
  • Queen Elizabeth II (93) has called on the British to To counter the coronavirus pandemic with characteristic British self-discipline and quiet determination. “I hope that in the coming years everyone can be proud of how they dealt with this challenge,” said the Queen on Sunday evening in a Addressing the British people and the Commonwealth. The speech is a sign that the government is increasingly concerned about the rapidly growing number of deaths from Covid-19 lung disease.
  • Europe is in the corona crisis before its historical test, write the two former federal foreign ministers Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) and Joschka Fischer (Greens) in a guest contribution for the Handelsblatt. No European country would come out of the crisis alone. Germany should now go ahead and participate in an EU aid program for particularly affected countries, they demand. Read the full post here.
  • Malta has sealed off a refugee camp after eight migrants tested positive for the corona virus. Around 1,000 African refugees were quarantined in the Hal Far camp for 14 days, the Ministry of Health said. The eight infected would be isolated. The camp is surrounded by police officers to ensure compliance with the conditions. Army vehicles were also stationed.
  • The biggest US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has extended production stoppages at its Washington state plants as a result of the corona crisis. The production remains suspended until further notice, the company said. Boeing had temporarily suspended production on March 23. In general, it had previously been expected that this would be lifted earlier this week.
  • Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe According to a media report, Tuesday may be due to the Corona crisis state of emergency calling out. This Monday he will probably announce this, reports the newspaper “Yomiuri”. The move would give Abe additional powers to the authorities in particularly affected parts of Japan. They can impose extensive curfews, cancel events and close schools and other public institutions.
  • The Number of infections detected with the corona virus has the brand of 1.2 million worldwide exceeded. This emerges from current figures from the American Johns Hopkins University. The lung disease Covid-19, which the virus Sars-CoV-2, which was practically unknown three months ago, can trigger died so far worldwide more than 69,000 people.

The Unreported should be high in case numbers and deaths, say scientists. First, the number of infections detected depends on how many people are tested. Virtually no country in the world has enough tests and laboratory capacities for evaluation. In addition, some countries started testing late or deliberately opt for a selective test strategy. On the other hand, many people with previous illnesses or in old age may have died from the viral infection without doctors having recognized or being able to check this at the time.
