“”Black lives matter” we are concerned ! “

The origin of the movement Black Lives Matter in the United States, there is evil, evil, institutional evil institutionalized. The injustice of a system that is visually impaired or, worse, perverse. Originally, there was the racism, the violence goes unpunished, the wounds unhealed of slavery. Originally, there was a rallying cry, a hope, a fool, a prayer that is painful.

→ REPORT. In the United States, the anger brings together the youth

Originally, in 2013, there are three young african american women, révulsées by the acquittal of a white policeman, murderer of a young african-american 17-year-old was killed by a bullet. The first, Alicia Garza, takes the pen : “black People. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter, the lives of black count [Black lives matter] “. The second, Patrisse Cullors, sharing these words, accompanied by a hashtag : #BlackLivesMatter. With Opal Tometi, they founded the platform BlackLivesMatter (1).

A fight inclusive

Their credo is the “healing “, path of personal healing and collective, where the differences and similarities are respected and celebrated. “We are guided by the fact that all the lives of the Black count, regardless of sexual identity, real or perceived, of the gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or beliefs of the human, the immigration status or nationality “, explain (2).

Their fight for freedom and justice against Blacks is rooted in their history of racial, but wants to be inclusive to all peoples. “To love and desire liberty and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same thing for the other. ”

→ CHRONIC. “Black” and “White” are not colors

They were accused of speaking only of the black people. “All lives matter “ is their horizon, but can we require it of a mother who has lost her child to cry about all the missing children ? The cry of the womb needs time, sometimes a lifetime or even several generations, for consoner to other pain.

8 minutes and 46 seconds of supplication

This is not the first time that a drama played out before our eyes. This is not the first, nor the last time that the violence is unleashed on the man or the woman in black.e. Why such an impact ? During the ceremony of the funeral of George Floyd, the Reverend Al Sharpton would chant endlessly : “You have kept your knee on our throats (…). The reason we manifest all over the world, it is because we are like George. We can’t breathe. We do not ask for, simply let us ! “(3).

The 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silent prayer during the ceremony were unsustainable. It is long, very long 8 minutes. “Black Lives Matter “, as “I can’t breathe “, is the cry of a people to self-asphyxiation, the supplication of a community scarred. We all know how evil and racism are deeply enkystés in our companies, how our human condition is stuck, how that legacy divides us and we are guilty (4). The dream of Martin Luther King, just as the life of George Floyd, is trying to find her breath and turns into Negro-Spiritualin 8 minutes of deafening silence.

A shock-wave seismic

“I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones will cry out” (Luke 19, 40). How to understand the worldwide coverage of what happened in Minneapolis on 25 may 2020 to 20 hours ? The impunity and indifference have they awakened our hearts of stone ? The helplessness and anger are they going to arm ourselves with stones ? The stone statues are they going to have blood on their hands ? In the Face of hate speech and to silence co-conspirators, the resistance must derive its energy in the depths of our common nature, beyond our cultures, our races, our stories : in our nature ” land-based sources “, the one who cries when the languages have no more words.

→ TO READ. Camden, the u.s. city that has reinvented its police

No one has ever overcome a stone, we will not be able to silence it. “Black Lives Matter “ we return to the origin before the racism, to this common origin of all humans, this identity ” earthy “, “adamic” for a humanity that takes the word. Yes, if we are silent, it is that we are returned to dust.

Social distancing may have saved eight million lives worldwide

Madrid

Updated:

save

Last January 23 China closed the city of Wuhan to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus that was killing many of its inhabitants. Since then, the pandemic has spread throughout the world and national and regional governments have been forced to implement severe measures of social distancing to flatten the contagion curve.

The effort and sacrifices are bearing fruit. According to the estimates of an analysis carried out by project experts Covid Compass International, coordinated by the Spanish Carlos Duarte from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi ArabiaAll these measures have served to save 7.9 million lives, the majority (7.2 million) in China.

The deaths of 7.2 million people have been avoided in China, 73,000 in Spain, 124,000 in South Korea, 65,000 in the United States, 155,000 in Italy, 71,000 in France and 30,000 in both Germany and the United Kingdom.

The figures for other countries are much smaller, but also significant. Estimates indicate that in mid-April, social distancing has already prevented the death of 73,000 people in Spain, 124,000 in South Korea, 155,000 in Italy, 71,000 in France, 30,000 in Germany and another 30,000 in the United Kingdom.

In the case of the United States, the decisions of its state governments to close schools, cancel public events and confine people to their homes since mid-March saved some 65,000 lives. Without these directives, a month later the number of victims in this country would be around 100,000 four times more than what has happened.

To carry out this study, based on a SIR model (with Susceptible, Infected and Recovered cases) developed by Professor David I. Ketcheson of KAUST, the number of daily deaths recorded in each country and state by the Johns Hopkins University and the New York Times, considering the global population data provided by United Nations.

The results on mortality rates, average infectious period and reproductive rate of the infection are based on a multitude of scientific articles, reports and databases. They include, for example, analyzes of patients on the Diamond Cruise (which was quarantined for nearly a month near Tokyo), records of the first outbreak in Wuhan, the spread of the virus in European countries, and excess mortality detected in Spain, Italy and New York.

“Based on the number of deaths reported, the model predicts the number of new infections and deaths, but the effects of different containment interventions are also included empirically to see how they influence mortality rates,” Duarte explains to SINC. .

The model calculates these rates taking into account the current estimates of mortality of infected people, which is currently 0.006; In other words, 0.6% of infected people die.

“The lives that have been saved could be lost later if there are no solutions, such as effective therapies or intelligent exit strategies that reduce the death rate,” says Carlos Duarte

“We are working on the development of this and other models for publication in scientific journals,” says Duarte, “but they already allow us to calculate the number of lives that have been saved (or deaths avoided) to date thanks to confinement measures in in relation to our prediction of mortality and what would have happened if they had not been adopted ”.

“However,” stresses the expert, “it must be borne in mind that those lives that have been saved could be lost later if there are no solutions, such as effective therapies or intelligent exit strategies that reduce the death rate.”

Professor Ketcheson agrees: ‘We must be cautious. Flattening the curve greatly reduces the spread of the virus in the short term, but also leads to a longer epidemic, with a similar number of people possibly infected in the end. Unless we rapidly develop smart long-term strategies and more effective treatment for severe cases of COVID-19, we may have only postponed many of these deaths. “

The case of Spain

Ketcheson cautions that the number of lives saved are estimates based on recorded numbers of deaths and their numbers are not completely accurate. He gives as an example the case of Spain, where he considers that almost a third of deaths by COVID-19 of the second half of March were attributed to other causes.

“They were not directly attributed to this disease, but could have been due to indirect effects due to the excessive pressure on our health system,” explains Duarte, adding: “In addition to reducing mortality, confinement measures lower the pressure on the system. toilet and its staff. An excessive burden on the health system increases mortality from other causes, either because patients cannot be properly cared for or because they fear going to the hospital and die as their condition worsens.

According to the study, almost a third of the deaths from COVID-19 in Spain during the second half of March were attributed to other causes, but indirectly they could be due to the excessive pressure that the pandemic exerted on the health system

The Spanish professor recognizes that the number of deaths averted is important, “but less than it could have been if the reduction and cessation interventions had been taken earlier.”

One of the team’s researchers, Professor Paula Moraga from the Bath University (United Kingdom), Is developing mathematical models to understand the spread of the virus, the risk factors that lead to COVID-19 mortality, and the impact of social distancing measures.

In his latest analysis, he used the data from the Ministry of Health of Spain and from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the USA.

«In Spain we have seen that the 95% of the deaths occur in People over 60 years, the 61% of the deceased are men, and with respect to ICUs, 67% of admissions are people over 60 years, with 59% men, “explains Moraga.

In United States, the 78% of admissions in the ICU and the 71% of the other hospitalizations occurred among people with one or more underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular disease.

This type of data can help countries develop specific policies and measures to deal with the pandemic and resume normal business activity. The models allow us to assess what effect different options would have to reduce current movement limitations on the number of future deaths. At the moment they suggest that the containment measures will continue being necessary until effective therapies are available.

Protect the highest risk groups

“It would be necessary to carry out a gradual lack of confinement in order to protect the groups at greatest risk, the elderly and other diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases,” says Moraga to SINC.

“In this way,” he continues, “the spread of the most vulnerable people and the collapse of hospitals would be avoided. There would be sufficient resources so that everyone could have the health care they needed, whether due to coronaviruses or other causes. Time slots should also be established during which people at risk can safely leave without having contact with other groups. “

“We should do a gradual unconfusion in which the groups at greatest risk are protected: older people and those with other diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, “says Paula Moraga

The expert also underlines the importance of performing test to know the real dimension of the pandemic: “There are many asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic cases who don’t know they have the disease, and they may be spreading to more people. These cases must be detected and isolated and their contacts to avoid contagion. Also, they should be done test to determine which people they have already passed the disease and if they are immune they can resume their normal activity ».

According to the researchers of the project Covid CompassTheir analyzes and models can assist health authorities, governments and the general public in decision-making, including specific policies and practices to resume normal business activity.

“We are currently evaluating exit actions from confinement that take into account specific risks, associated with gender and age, that could allow for relaxation without increasing deaths,” says Duarte, who insists: “Lifting confinement requires very cautious because you can easily lose everything you have won ».
