Since the beginning of the spread of coronavirus in Russia held more than 14.2 million tests on СOVID-19, under medical supervision there were more than 1.5 million people. This was reported on the website of Rospotrebnadzor.

On 11 June under observation was about 322 thousand people.

On 10 June the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that the regions are almost 650 thousand people were tested for immunity to coronavirus. According to her, the immune system was identified in 14% of the total number tested, and it is “considerable” level, while the best immunity is developed in children.

According to the latest data of the operational headquarters for the day in Russia revealed the 8987 cases of new coronavirus infection. Since the beginning of the epidemic of coronavirus in the country were infected 511,4 million people. Russia remains, according to statistics from the Johns Hopkins University, in third place in the world in the number of cases.

Was it the flu or was it corona? An Innatoss test provides certainty

Dorien contacted Innatoss herself. The lines were short, because she knows the director. Due to the lack of corona tests, many people have been ill, but have never heard whether it was an ordinary flu or an infection with the corona virus. “People want to know when they can pick up their normal life a bit,” says Dorien.

Tests available to everyone
Self-tests are unreliable and are even prohibited in the Netherlands. That is why Dorien founded the IMTest Foundation on. With the aim of making tests available to everyone. This has now been achieved with the cooperation of Innatoss.

The test, a flat disc with two drop holes, is small and practical and more than 99 percent reliable. With one small prick in the tip of the ring finger, Kim van den Berg takes a drop of blood which is carefully dripped into one of the holes. In the other goes a special liquid. “A check mark indicates whether the test has been carried out correctly. Within 20 minutes we will now know whether there are antibodies in the blood and therefore whether there has been a corona infection.

Testing is no joke
Via the website of Innatoss people can register for a test in one of the mobile laboratories the day after Easter. Although Dorien warns that it is ‘no joke’. “We do urge people to only sign up if they have actually had serious complaints associated with the corona virus.”

The test subjects should also no longer have complaints for two weeks. “The antibodies are only visible in the blood after four weeks,” says Dorien. So testing too early gives an unreliable result. In case of a positive test result in the mobile lab, a second more extensive test will follow in the Innatoss lab. Öm very sure that the result is correct. “

Apparent safety
A positive test provides clarity, but no safety for the environment. It is therefore not the intention that people who have already had the virus will live it up because they believe that they can no longer get it. “That would be very selfish,” says Dorien. “You may have antibodies, but you can still transmit the virus.”

“Think about grabbing an infected shopping cart. If you then have tea with your elderly mother and grab the teapot, you can still infect your mother in this way,” says Dorien. That is why she emphasizes that people who have already had the virus must comply with all RIVM guidelines.

Hope and confidence
“It gives hope and confidence when people know they have had it and are no longer a source of infection.” In addition, Dorien emphasizes that it is also very nice to know that you may have gotten away with mild complaints. “This virus is also very scary. People die.”

Antibody to corona had been in the freezer for years

Dutch virologists were the first in the world to make a targeted antibody against the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that blocks the virus. This antibody can potentially be used as a drug against Covid-19, but it can also be used in a rapid diagnostic test for the infection. The discovery of the antibody is a first step, says lead researcher virologist Berend-Jan Bosch, “It may take months to years before it can be put to practical use.”

The team of scientists from Utrecht and Rotterdam was overwhelmed this weekend by the great media interest for them premature research results. When the scientists put it on the preprint server on Thursday afternoon BioArxiv immediately went viral, says Bosch, last author of the article, on the phone. “That interferes with the normal scientific procedure. And that is difficult because the conclusions are still subject to change. ”

Coincidence

The article now rests with “a renowned scientific journal,” and the rule is that researchers should not speak to the media before the article is accepted. But everything that has to do with the coronavirus is under a magnifying glass.

The discovery by Bosch and his team is a fluke that could change the diagnosis and treatment of Covid-19 in the future. It is not that far yet, Bosch continues to emphasize, but he is still proud.

The discovery stems from earlier work on antibodies to the Sars Coronavirus, which caused an epidemic in 2002-2003 but could soon be controlled. At the time, the virologists were trying to find antibodies that would simultaneously bind to sars, mers and OC43, a relatively harmless coronavirus. “Some of the cells we made back then only made antibodies to sars,” explains Bosch. “We weren’t so interested in that at the time, but we kept them in the freezer here in Utrecht. When the new coronavirus broke out, we immediately investigated whether the antibodies of these old materials would also work against SARS-CoV-2. ”

Indeed, four of the old cell lines also produced antibodies that bound to the new coronavirus. They bind to the spikes, the excellent proteins on the coat of the virus, which form the characteristic “crown” of coronaviruses. “We were able to safely test that by placing the spikes of the virus on a lame virus in the laboratory,” says Bosch. “At least one of the four antibodies that bound to the spikes was found to be able to inhibit the growth of the virus.”

Subsequently, a team of Bart Haagmans in the Erasmus MC virology laboratory repeated the tests with the dangerous coronaviruses sars and SARS-CoV-2. They confirmed that the antibody inhibits sars-like coronaviruses very specifically and strongly. Bosch: “It turns out that it does not respond to the four relatively harmless strains of coronavirus that usually circulate among people and usually only cause a cold. But it does respond to sars and the new coronavirus. ”

Vaccine may be ready earlier

An antibody that kills dangerous corona viruses would be a wonderful drug against Covid-19. “We want to continue communicating it to the patient as soon as possible,” says molecular biologist Frank Grosveld of Erasmus MC, also a member of the team. “We have to produce thousands of liters of it in animal cells. We cannot do that ourselves, we need an industrial partner for that. We are thinking of large pharmaceutical companies: they have experience with this and the capacity for it. ”

According to Bosch, it will take “at least another year” before the antibody as a medicine can be tested for safety and effectiveness. He takes into account that a vaccine against Covid-19 is ready earlier. “If so, I think a vaccine will be preferable to monoclonal antibody therapy – because it’s cheaper. You need almost one gram per person of an antibody, much less of a vaccine; after all, your own body functions as an antibody factory. ”

The antibody can also be the basis for a simple, rapid test for the new coronavirus. A color reaction on a strip then shows whether the virus is present in saliva, for example. Current tests must be performed in a laboratory and take valuable time. “With an antibody test, you could immediately test yourself for the virus at home,” says Bosch.

Bosch wants to investigate further whether this antibody makes all sars-like coronaviruses harmless. “In the future, this could immediately neutralize a new jump from a dangerous coronavirus. In fact, bats still contain dozens of different viruses that are potentially dangerous if they infect humans. If we already have this antibody ready in sufficient quantities, we are better prepared for it. ”
