After the winning matches of Magda Linette and Hubert Hurkacz in Rome, the last Polish representative in the first round was Iga Świątek. The Polish woman faced Arantxa Rus, who broke through the qualifications for the tournament.
Initially, they both won their applications, although there were some problems. Only in the fifth game, Rus used the first break point and made a big step to win the set. Fortunately, Świątek quickly equalized, also using the first chance to break.
In the next two games, they both won their passes, but then again were unable to maintain their service. First, Świątek lost him, but after a while Polka managed to equalize it at 5: 5. It was also not very interesting later, when Rus broke Christmas again. The young competitor, however, kept her cool and led to a tie-break. In it, however, Rus turned out to be better, winning 7-5.
The beginning of the second set was terrible for our player. Swiatek fought with the rival’s pass, but then she was overcome and it was 0: 2 in no time. In the third game, Polka had a chance to break her opponent, but she missed three break points and ultimately Rus defended her application.
In the fourth game, Świątek finally defended her service, but after a while she lost the game to zero and the situation became very difficult. Admittedly, the Pole led to the result 4: 2, but then she did not use the chance to break again.
In the eighth game, Świątek still tried and defended two match balls. At the third, already on the Dutch service, she failed and finally lost the set 3: 6. Thus, Arantxa Rus advanced to the second round, who will now face Marka Vondrousova from the Czech Republic.
Iga Świątek – Arantxa Rus 6: 7 (5-7), 3: 6
