In its most powerful version, the Formentor can accelerate to 100 in less than five seconds and boasts a torque of 400 Nm. It is a pity that its sound does not meet these parameters.
This type of body somewhere on the border between a crossover and a small SUV, crossed with a coupe, was called in Cupre CUV, ie Crossover Utility Vehicle Author: Jakub Šuplata
Cupra is definitely not an unknown concept, it has been in the world for a quarter of a century. By this name, composed of the words “cup” and “racing”, Seat referred to powerful derivatives of its standard models. And that was until 2018, when Cupra became independent as a distinctive original brand.
In recent years, such independence has been in vogue – this is how it separated from Volvo as a separate brand of performance cars Polestar, DS from Citroën and almost at the same time Renault revived the legendary Alpine brand.
Interference with black
But back to Cupre. It was introduced first by the Cupra Ateca model, then by Leon, and then came what we were waiting for – the first stand-alone Cupra model, the Formentor. And that’s what we tested recently.
The fact that, although this is the very first independent model of the new brand, it got straight into the narrower 7-member final of the European Car of the Year competition (COTY – Car of the Year) also testifies to the fact that it was really successful. And not only did Formentor fight his way there, but he even finished on the podium. He finally won third place, separated from the second by a single point!
The one we had the opportunity to try is the “icing on the cake” in the current offer. This is currently the most powerful version, which boasts a two-liter petrol four-cylinder with 310 horsepower, 400 Nm of torque, available in a relatively wide speed range from 2,000 to 5,450 rpm and 4 × 4 drive, which Cupra refers to as 4Drive . In practice, this means accelerating to a hundred in less than 5 seconds.
Strong and even stronger
However, until we get to it in more detail, we must specify that it will soon not be the most powerful version. A few days ago, Cupra officially confirmed that the VZ5 model will be launched, which will have an iconic 5-cylinder 2.5 TSI engine on the hood, which uses, for example, the Audi Q3 RS. With it, the Formentor will have an output of 390 hp (287 kW), maximum torque of 480 Nm and will accelerate to 100 in 4.2 seconds.
The data in the digital cockpit – regardless of the style chosen – has always been very clear and legible. Author: Jakub Šuplata
However, “our” tested 310-horsepower Formentor will put it in a hundred in less than 5 seconds. Let’s look at it in more detail. The four tailpipes in the rear will tell you that it will not be a completely normal car. When you start it (by the way, with the button located directly on the steering wheel), you will doubt this first impression of your exhaust.
The sound of Formentor is relatively insignificant, although we admit that we were partially influenced by Cupra Ateca in the evaluation. We also had the opportunity to try this for a short time in the “four-exhaust” version, but with the difference that the well-known term “Akrapovič” is very well-known on the ends of its exhausts. The difference in the sound of these cars was therefore quite audible.
In the cabin
But you can also switch the Formentor – again with a button on the steering wheel – to a sporty or ultimate “Cupra” driving mode, then the sound will change (probably) for the better. However, in an artificial and somewhat unnatural way, which can also hinder someone. More importantly, other things will change in these regimes, but more on that later. Now a few more words about the interior.
You have a digital cockpit and, of course, a large infotainment display. The appearance of the devices directly in front of the driver can be changed not only overall, but the device shield is divided into three areas, each of which can be customized. As is the case with a sports car, the data is clear and legible, more than clarity in this case, the clarity of what we appreciate was thought of.
The seats were surprisingly comfortable in terms of how sporty they looked, but with excellent lateral guidance. The suitcase has a relatively high edge and is not one of the largest, 420 liters are considered a decent value for its dimensions. The space at the front is good, sufficient at the back, both in the area of the head and knees, but you will not “roll out” too much.
When you drive in “civilian” mode, the car will behave like that – the sound is nothing extra, the seats are comfortable, the cabin is quiet, the chassis is comfortable. Simply drive the car rather than actively driving. And with such a relaxed “driving”, we reached an average in the city of just over ten liters, outside the city about a liter less and even on the highway when driving in the range of 100 to 130 km / h, we were consuming 9.5 liters, so quite significantly above the declared values.
Two in one
However, as soon as you switch the car to sports or Cupra mode, not only the sound but also the overall settings of the car will change. It will definitely no longer be about “driving”, but about active and dynamic driving, corresponding to an acceleration of less than five seconds. The chassis stiffens, the car is stable even in sharp corners, the steering is more direct at once, the sound is sharper and in corners you will also feel the effective brakes.
The four tailpipes already suggest something about the car’s performance. Author: Jakub Šuplata
In front, we had huge Brembo surcharge discs, for which you pay more than two thousand. With acceleration that can push you hard into the seats, the fast transmission has no problem immediately downshifting by two gears, and the higher revs then take just as long. In this version, you simply buy two cars in one (compared to the base, the price corresponds to this). You can drive it comfortably and calmly, and it adapts to it without any problems, but at the touch of a button, it becomes a really sharp sports car that you will really enjoy driving.
And what is also very important for us – at a time of increasing unification of cars, the Formentor is an easily recognizable original model that not only drives well, but also managed to maintain its own unique face even at this time.
