Didier Robert boycotts the 4th summit of heads of state and government of the Indian Ocean Commission.
It is with amazement that Reunion Islanders learned that the President of the Region has decided to personally boycott the summit of Heads of State and Government of the Indian Ocean Commission which will take place in Moroni, Comoros, this Saturday. 23 August.
It is the first time in the history of the IOC that a president of the Regional Council of Reunion has decided to boycott the summit of heads of state and government.
The first IOC summit took place in Madagascar in March 1991. The President of the Regional Council Pierre Lagourgue participated in this event alongside the French Prime Minister, Michel Rocard.
The second IOC summit took place in Reunion Island in December 1999. Paul Vergès, President of the Regional Council, and Jean-Luc Poudroux, President of the General Council participated in this summit alongside the President of the French Republic, Jacques Chirac.
The 3rd summit took place in Antananarivo, Madagascar in July 2005. Paul Vergès, President of the Regional Council, and Nassimah Dindar, President of the General Council participated in this summit alongside the French Head of State, Jacques Chirac.
The decision taken today by Didier Robert appears incomprehensible. If it is to show hostility towards the President of the French Republic, François Hollande, why choose not to participate in the IOC summit and not to go to the Comoros for a Franco-French question while Didier Robert will participate in François Hollande’s visit to Reunion?
Since when must internal relations in a country compromise relations with foreign countries when the stakes are so important?
How can Didier Robert fail to see the affront he makes to the Malagasy presidency which currently holds the presidency of the IOC and the affront to the presidency of the Union of the Comoros which hosts this summit and which will take the lead? relay of the presidency? How can he fail to see the affront to all the heads of state or government who will all be present?
How can he justify his refusal to go to the Comoros, where he has never been, when he regularly visits the Seychelles, for example?
But above all the most serious nature of this decision by Didier Robert is that the willful affront to the five heads of state or government will not soon be forgotten. This is what will remain in the minds of each of the leaders of these states.
How can the declarations of Didier Robert affirming that he wants to develop regional cooperation be credible with those whom he has decided to ignore and who are the supreme responsible for decisions in matters of regional cooperation? How to take him seriously when he chooses to boycott the highest body of the IOC, without taking into account the interests of Reunion? The summit of heads of state and government of the IOC is indeed a historic opportunity to give new impetus to regional cooperation and to advance strategic issues in the interest of the people.
Didier Robert’s decision is not likely to increase Reunion’s authority within the IOC. ”
