Atletico Madrid and Monaco have made official on Monday the agreement for the transfer of Gelson Martins to the Monte Carlo club. The Portuguese, who was on loan there since last January, will be linked to Monaco for the next five seasons.
Martins came out last summer from Sporting Lisbon after an altercation of the team with the ultras of the Portuguese team and several confrontations with the president of the club. After the incident, several players asked for the letter of freedom, including Martins, who ended up calling at Atlético, although later the team from the Spanish capital had to pay about 23 million euros for the player's pass, after a complaint from the club Lisbon to FIFA.
Without opportunities and without fitting into the scheme of Diego Simeone, the Portuguese player was loaned to Monaco, where he has been one of the key pieces for the permanence of the team in French Ligue 1, contributing four goals and four assists in 17 games played.
"I am very happy to be able to join the Monaco and I am looking forward to joining the group again next season. Despite the difficult situation, we managed to show some good things last season and will do everything possible to help the club achieve its goals this season, "said the player after the agreement was formalized.
