The augmented reality goes from the glasses to the inside of the eye

Magic Leap, Oculus, Hololens or Google Glasses. These are names related to virtual reality, augmented and even mixed. Little by little these new ways of feeling and living parallel worlds are making their way into the day to day.

However, laboratories and R & D departments of large companies are already working on new projects and prototypes. The latest advance in this field has the signature of the IMT Atlantique technology school and the Flexible Electronics Department of the Center Georges Charpak (both in France).

His project moves away from the current market trend, although it is well known in the sector, since google already entered into this adventure without much success. French researchers are working on the development of an intelligent lens and, in this case, autonomous.

According to its developers, this new device includes a flexible microbattery that is responsible for feeding the necessary energy, according to R & D. "This first project is part of a larger and more ambitious project aimed at creating a new generation of smart lenses linked to the appearance of augmented reality helmets," the researchers said in a statement.

The incorporation of the battery allows a light emitting diode to be illuminated continuously for several hours. According to its creators this new type of contact lens that can introduce an augmented reality technology. "This project will include numerous collaborations, including one with the Institut de la Vision in Paris, for a visual assistance device for the blind," the R & D researchers point out.

There are already studies that point out that the market for smart contact lenses will grow 10.4% by the year 2023. The IMT project follows the line set by Google and even Samsung. The Korean company patented in some lenses with built-in camera, like the great Hollywood blockbusters.

In addition, the South Korean project has antennas to communicate with a smartphone and other sensors to measure vital signs. However, at the moment, the prototype has been shelved.

Beyond leisure and health, the University of Michigan has gone a step further and is working on an investigation, funded by the US Department of Defense, to develop lenses that allow soldiers to see in the dark using the thermography. Its composition is a layer of pure carbon, called graphene, to capture the entire spectrum of light, including the ultraviolet.

According to Market Research Future, the key players in the smart contact lens market are: Samsung (South Korea), Sony (Japan), Alcon (USA), Google (USA) and Sensimed SA (Switzerland). His calculations suggest that in the next decade this market will generate 7,200 million dollars in revenue.
