At the pier in Gdynia Orłowo, the body of a 49-year-old missing last week was found. Late in the afternoon on Thursday, the man was supposed to practice swimming in the Gdańsk Bay.
The press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Gdynia, Jolanta Grunert, confirmed that the body of the man wanted since last Friday was found. 49-year-old Marek P. trained a triathlon. On Thursday afternoon he went to cycling training, and then he planned to swim in the Gdańsk Bay near the pier in Gdynia Orłowo. The family reported the man missing during the night.
During the search, the man’s family told the media that he had recently moved to Tricity from Warsaw after two decades. He was very fit and was getting back in shape – previously he had taken part in international triathlon competitions many times.
He swam great. Has he drowned?
There were big waves at sea that day. However, the fact that the triathlete’s death may have been caused by an accident is evidenced by the fact that his belongings were found on the beach. The officers also found the man’s bicycle pinned near the pier.
Immediately after the man was reported missing, his search by the SAR Marine Search and Rescue Service and a Navy helicopter began. Policemen and firefighters also took part in the action. It was not found then.
Despite the suspicions that the 49-year-old drowned, the causes of his death will be checked. “We turned the case over to the prosecutor’s office,” Grunert said.
