The chief infectious disease specialist in the United States considered the number of coronavirus victims underestimated: Society: World: Lenta.ru

U.S. chief infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci found the number of coronavirus victims in the country to be underestimated. He said this, speaking at a hearing in the committee on health, education, labor and pensions of the Senate of the US Congress, reports TASS.

So he commented on the statement of the senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders that real figures can be 50 percent higher than official figures. Fauchi noted that he was not sure that it was 50 percent more. “But most of us feel that the number of deaths is probably higher than this figure,” he said.

According to the infectious disease specialist, there may be people who died at home, who had a coronavirus, but they were not counted as patients with COVID-19 because they were not hospitalized. “I don’t know for sure how many percent is higher, but almost certainly this figure is higher,” he said.

In April, The New York Times published a study by a number of expert demographers who, after examining mortality data during the coronavirus pandemic, described the number of victims as very low. So, the publication pointed to 28 thousand excess deaths in Spain, the Netherlands, England and Wales, Sweden, Belgium, Istanbul, Jakarta and New York. It was also indicated that the current mortality rate is higher than usual at times.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are currently almost 1.4 million cases of coronavirus infection in the United States. 82.3 thousand people with this diagnosis died, more than 230 thousand recovered.
