PETRA, Jordan – The official media say that the record of sudden floods caused by heavy rains in Jordan is 11, and that searches for missing persons are continuing.
Saturday's reports came a day after the floods in parts of Jordan, including Petra, a former trade hub carved in pink rock. Hundreds of visitors from Petra ran to the heights on Friday as the water passed through a narrow canyon leading to the Treasure, Petra's main attraction.
Government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat and civil defense officials said the death toll was rising early Saturday after the discovery of another body in the Madaba region to the south from the capital, Amman. They said that the search for the missing was continuing.
Friday's floods came two weeks after sudden floods near the Dead Sea killed 21 people, mostly children.
