For a few days now, news has been circulating on the Internet that the Lada Niva Legend will receive a modern four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1.8 liters, with which it will advance into small-series production. The power unit originally working in the Vesta and Xray models is to be tuned to 122 horsepower, with 177 Nm of power and its implementation in the Niva should be taken care of by Super-Avto – a subsidiary of AvtoVAZ. And you know what? It’s all true.
The first prototype is already running, so we know that the new engine had to be stored longitudinally by the modifiers and add several modifications, such as another clutch or flywheel. Furthermore, the crankshaft and lubrication system had to be modified, and a pile of hoses, cables or small electronics had to be added.
It is also known that “tuning” 18-year-olds eat oil, however, the boys from Super-Avto have reduced it 5-6 times by installing improved piston rings and valve seals.
But that’s not the end of it, in addition to a more powerful engine, the car got a completely new exhaust, a more massive radiator with quieter fans from Chevrolet Niva, its own control software, front axle modification, rear stabilizer and redesigned gears, including a new lever. The reserve at the Niva is normally stored under the hood, however, due to the built-in larger 1.8-liter four-cylinder, it did not fit here and had to be moved to the rear of the car.
The developers claim that their Niva Legend SuperA 1.8 has the same torque at 1,000 rpm as the original 17,000 (83 hp) at top speed. Also, the acceleration from zero to one hundred has been reduced from the original 17 seconds to 12 to 13 seconds.
The gearbox remains original for the time being, it is said that the higher torsion can withstand it. The question also arose about the potential installation of a powerful engine in the technically related Niva Travel, however, this is allegedly not possible, due to the weight and the associated excessive load on the transmission. Travel will probably remain a pleasing lazy forever.
Next year (it will not be this year), the vehicle should start production, in a small series of a total of 150 to 300 pieces. So it will be a limit that will probably be possible to buy in the Czech Republic as well, and we know how much this unique one will cost. Well, keep your hats on…
According to the current exchange rate of the Russian ruble and the Czech koruna, including imports, customs duties, taxes and necessary modifications to the latest Euro 6 emission standard, we get to the amount of CZK 600,000 including VAT. And this is an increase of more than CZK 200,000 compared to the classic level sold in our country.
AvtoVAZ is currently struggling with a lack of components, it lacks Bosch parts for the ABS system, while the markets, including ours, are relatively hungry for insufficient floodplains. But this doesn’t seem to be the worst news.
Information is beginning to leak out that in 2023 the production of the legendary Niva will be definitively terminated, which is supported by the expiration of the original Russian Global Homologation (OTTS). It can certainly be extended, which costs some time (sometimes more than a year) and money, but the question remains whether the Russians will do it at all, when at that time the second generation Niva built on the platform (CMF-B) will probably knock on the door. shared with Dacia and Renault, respectively.

So we didn’t give it to us and we asked our well-informed Russian sources. So far, they do not have information about any significant progress in the development of the second Niva, which is not surprising at all. AvtoVAZ is implementing its innovations relatively slowly, so the announcement of this or that date is usually only indicative.
We do not believe that Lada would voluntarily cut her still well-sold model, in which Europeans oversaturated by modern interest are relatively intensely interested. And most importantly, they buy it – only this year (8/2021), according to the statistics of the Association of Car Importers, at least 88 new icebergs got on Czech roads (most of them were Nivy) and we do not count Bronto and VIS derivatives, which are registered under a separate brand of factory .
However, the final word in Lada has its majority owner – Renault – and when he calls, the legendary square terrain will disappear from the market before you can take a look. But what, Niva will come different, young, new anyway… But will it be such a chisel as a classic?
