Renewed or die. Sony It seems that he is quite clear, the world has changed, camera sales have fallen and it is no surprise. Smartphones have come to dominate portable photography and the ‘YouTube generation’ is full of creators and enthusiasts who are eager to make good quality videos.
Sony knows this, and that is why today they are announcing the new member of the Alpha family: the Sony A7C, a small camera mirrorless which reminds us of the increasingly moribund bridge or point-and-shot cameras, only now with premium capabilities such as a full-frame sensor, articulated screen and even 4K recording. All in a lightweight and compact case.
The goal: the YouTube generation
Let’s analyze the idea: we have a Sony Alpha with a Full-Frame sensor that It can be used with E-mount interchangeable lenses but whose size looks like an APS-C. In fact, the Sony A7C would be the Sony a6600 only with a Full-Frame sensor. Which means that we will have capabilities to spare for all kinds of situations.
The main features of the new Sony A7c son:
- Sensor of 24.2 megapixels, 35mm, full-size backlit. (The same as the Sony A7 III)
- Articulating 3-inch LCD touch screen. (Like A7sIII)
- Optical stabilization in 5-axis body.
- Advanced autofocus (AF) system. (Like A7sIII)
- Wi-Fi Dual-band (11a/b/g/n/ac) y Bluetooth.
- Sony a6600 body, very small, light and with electronic viewfinder on one side.
- Video recording at 4K and 30fps without time limit.
- A slot for SD cards.
- Comes with a new 28-60mm f / 4-5.6 lens
As we see, and indeed Sony highlights it, the A7C combines more advanced and expensive camera capabilitiessuch as the A7 III and A7R IV. That is, a small beast that seeks to break ground in the competitive world of photography and video.
As we already mentioned, Sony designed this A7C with an eye toward vloggers and youtubers, so its weight is just 509 grams with battery and lens. The 3-inch flip-up screen has 950,000 dots and is fully articulated, the touch functions are only for focusing but not for the menus.
We also have a five-axis stabilization system on the body with five vibration reduction stops. This makes it ideal for recording freehand video when a gimbal is unavailable.
The Sony a7C allows you to record video 4K Full-Frame hasta 30fps, o 1080p hasta 120fps with unlimited time and in 4: 2: 0 8-bit format and 100Mbps bit rate. We can also record in S-Log2 and S-Log3 to maximize dynamic range.
The autofocus part is another element where Sony is putting emphasis. Is about an ultra-fast hybrid phase detection AF created by Sony, with 693 phase detection points in full-frame mode. It also includes Sony’s latest AI features such as human and animal eye tracking, object tracking, predictive control, and adjustable AF transition speeds in movie mode.
The A7C has burst speeds of up to 10 fps with continuous autofocus (14-bit RAW and JPEG). The EVF features a 2.36 million dot OLED viewfinder. In the case of the battery, we have the same as the A6600, which will give us, according to Sony, up to 680 shots with the viewfinder or 740 shots with the LCD monitor.
Here we only have one memory card slot, compatible with UHS-II fast cards. This translates to up to 45 uncompressed RAW, 115 compressed RAW, or 215 JPEG frames in one burst. The a7C also has a Type 3.2 USB-C port that can charge the battery, along with an HDMI microphone and headphone and microphone ports.
Sony A7C price and availability
The new Sony A7C will cost $ 1,800 just for the body, or $ 2,100 with Sony’s new FE 28-60mm f / 4-5.6 lens. In the coming days it is expected to know the details about its commercialization in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
