The new car has been given a button that does not control any function, nor does the carmaker know what it is for

If you think we are living in a rather crazy time, this will not lead you to other thoughts. In addition, a button without an assigned function was not inadvertently or mistakenly found in the car for a pre-production piece, so it is on purpose in the series version.
In the case of pre-production cars, it sometimes happens that the manufacturer fits them with components that have nothing to do with later production cars, we have experienced this many times. These cars are not aimed at customers, instead they are used to verify production processes or at most to present to selected groups of people. After that, they usually go to the scrap yard, while all the financial burden goes, of course, to the carmaker in question. She therefore tries to spend as little on the specimen as possible, so she often takes what she has on hand just to speed up the whole process. That’s why, now, who’s wondering why the Toyota Corolla GR has an electric mode button when it comes to a pure combustion car.
Unlike the Japanese hot hatch, whose pre-production display pieces the manufacturer reached for mismatched components just to save money, the new GMC Hummer EV is a full-fledged car that arrived in the first garages of private owners at the end of last year. However, it has a button that does nothing. What’s more, when colleagues from the GM-Trucks website discovered it and asked the carmaker’s representatives, they found that even the brand’s technicians had no idea what it was for. But as it turned out, its implementation did not happen by mistake.
Instead, the GMC decided to involve the owner of the electric Hummer a little more in the game. Therefore, as soon as they press the button in the form of a triangle with a pressed “H” in the middle on the driving mode selector located in the middle tunnel, the text “Your Mode” will appear in the middle screen. Your Mission. EpicIdeas@GMC.com ”. The carmaker thus invites the clientele to decide for itself what exactly that button will activate. The given answers are to be sent to the mentioned e-mail, while the GMC evaluates them and subsequently makes the given function available through the online upgrade.
It is certainly a strange move that some may appreciate. On the other hand, it is a double-edged sword that can bring both considerable enthusiasm and, of course, just as much disappointment. Not only for the customers themselves, whose proposals will not be accepted, but also for the carmaker itself. This, of course, can receive a much smaller response than it expects. Simply because not so many people will actually ride an electric Hummer.
It should be noted that no matter how much the usable capacity of 212.7 kWh has a range of 529 kilometers, it will not be achievable. The electric Hummer is a 5.5 meter long, 2.2 meter wide and 2 meter high car. Above all, however, it weighs 4,103 kilograms, actually more than 4 tons. These are then taken care of by three electric motors producing 1,014 horses. All you have to do is press it well, and all of a sudden you will have a big problem with the range. Especially when the transmission of power on the road is ensured by 35-inch off-road and therefore not exactly economical tires.
But we will not overtake and rather wait for what the GMC will get out of based on the answers. At the same time, our colleagues suggested the possibility of locking the front or rear axle, which will of course help the movement in the field. According to the carmaker’s representatives, something like this would be possible, as there is no direct connection between the front and rear wheels. And since both rear wheels are also independent, it’s really possible to control anything with that button in the end. Although we wouldn’t bet on a pop-up seat like in the James Bond movies.
The electric Hummer is currently only available in Edition 1. However, all copies were sold out in just ten minutes. Now the carmaker has to make the cars, hoping that the customers will also become its co-developers. Photo: GMC
