The number of people infected with coronavirus in the Netherlands rises to 321 | NOW

The number of coronavirus infections in the Netherlands has risen again. With 56 new patients, the total is 321, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported Monday. The death toll has been three since Sunday.

Most patients live in Noord-Brabant. It concerns 134 people, according to the RIVM. The province of Utrecht with 52 patients is in second place.

The RIVM also reports that of 150 infected persons it is known that they have been abroad. Most were in Italy. The rest were in Germany, France, Iran, Austria, Cape Verde, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.

It is not yet known how ninety patients became infected. Research is being done into this. The results of a survey among care staff in Noord-Brabant are also not yet known. The RIVM reports that it will soon be publishing more information about this.

The GGD is still mapping who the 56 newly infected people have been in contact with. This so-called contact investigation is started as soon as someone appears to be infected with the virus.

Most infected people have mild symptoms and therefore stay in home insulation. People are only admitted to hospital if they have serious complaints. The three people in their 80s who died last week from COVID-19, the disease that causes the corona virus, were in the hospital.

The coronavirus in short

  • The virus spreads mainly through cough and sneeze drops that hang in the air for a short time. Anyone who shows no symptoms is hardly a risk of infection.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. However, this figure is falling due to all precautions.
  • The vast majority have mild (flu-like) symptoms.
  • Almost all deaths concern older or already sick people.
